Full Job Description
The Sales Engineer is a customer-facing technical growth resource who helps Commercial Fleet Sales win, expand, and accelerate complex business opportunities. This role brings an engineering mindset to customer discussions, strengthening the sales team's credibility while assessing customer concepts, priorities, and operational needs across their fleet. The Sales Engineer translates those needs into practical solutions developed in partnership with the Product Development Engineering Team, improving opportunity quality, response speed, solution accuracy, and overall win probability. In addition to supporting new business development, the Sales Engineer helps expand customers' adoption of Wheeler's existing product portfolio, identifies additional opportunities to deliver value beyond stated customer requirements, and converts customer feedback and field observations into new product development initiatives. This role also plays a key part in accelerating customer adoption of new, validated Wheeler products and solutions, helping drive revenue growth and long-term customer success.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to and may include other duties as assigned:

Customer Interaction
  • Join prioritized customer visits, fleet reviews, ride-alongs, quarterly business reviews, trade shows, and technical presentations.
  • Assess customer objectives and current practices to suggest use of current Wheeler products or developing new items.
  • Translate customer ideas and needs into recommendations and solution concepts.
  • Support field evaluations, troubleshooting, installation reviews, and customer follow-up.
  • Participate in supplier reviews, product comparisons, field evaluations, and launch readiness meetings.

Sales Support
  • Serve as the technical lead for designated opportunities and strategic accounts.
  • Support technical presentations, proposals, quotations, demonstrations and implementation handoffs.
  • Validate fit, application, scope, assumptions, dependencies, and technical feasibility before customer commitment.
  • Communicate technical trade-offs and Wheeler differentiation clearly, while protecting account ownership.
  • Help train sales personnel and customers; create concise application guides, bulletins, FAQs, and presentation content.

Wheeler Branded Parts Growth
  • Advance solutions for ProMaster, Transit, Class 8 & medium-duty trucks, trailers, municipal, utility, and other fleets.
  • Coordinate application reviews of custom or modified solutions with engineering, suppliers and installation teams.
  • Create solution packages and application guides for broader sales use by additional customers.
  • Monitor relevant fleet platforms, aftermarket technologies, competitors, and regulatory developments for new opportunities.
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations for growth opportunities in new, current and emerging markets.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Automotive Technology, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience
    • - or an additional 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree
  • Experience supporting technical products in automotive, heavy-duty truck, industrial, manufacturing, or a related market.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle systems, aftermarket parts, product applications and technical troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated customer-facing and sales-support capability with clear, business-oriented communication.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, presentation, writing, organization, and project-management skills.
  • Ability to balance customer needs, technical feasibility, profitability, speed, and risk.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and use of customer relationship management and opportunity-tracking tools.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to customer, supplier, fleet, installation, and field locations.


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Commercial, government, USPS, utility, vocational, or national-account fleet experience.
  • Background in technical sales, field engineering, product management, fleet maintenance, or vehicle integration.
  • Knowledge of Class 8, medium-duty, light commercial, and vocational platforms; ProMaster or Transit experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with drawings, GD&T, testing, manufacturing, validation, quality systems, supplier reviews, or value engineering.
