Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Regulatory Accounting Manager to join our Accounting team supporting upstream oil and gas operations. This role is responsible for leading regulatory accounting and compliance activities, including royalty and severance tax accounting, the unclaimed property (escheat) process, audit support, and internal controls. The ideal candidate will bring strong upstream oil and gas accounting experience, sound knowledge of applicable regulatory reporting requirements, and the ability to partner effectively across accounting, land, operations, and leadership in a fast-paced environment.
Reporting Structure
This position reports to the Controller - Operations Accounting.
Primary Responsibilities
- Regulatory Compliance: Lead compliance with applicable accounting and regulatory requirements affecting upstream oil and gas operations, including GAAP, SEC reporting expectations, and relevant state regulatory frameworks. Monitor regulatory changes and implement updates to processes, policies, and reporting as needed.
- Royalty and Tax Accounting: Lead royalty and severance tax accounting functions, including oversight of ownership-related accounting, regulatory obligations, calculation methodologies, timely filings and payments, and supporting documentation.
- Unclaimed Property Compliance: Lead compliance with state unclaimed property (escheat) requirements, in collaboration with Division Order, including due diligence, reporting, remittance, audit support, and related internal controls
- Audit Support: Serve as a primary accounting contact for external and internal audit requests related to regulatory, royalty, and tax matters. Prepare schedules, provide support documentation, and help resolve audit inquiries efficiently.
- Internal Controls: Develop, maintain, and enhance internal controls over financial reporting and regulatory compliance to reduce risk, improve accuracy, and support a strong control environment.
- Compliance Governance: Identify, assess, and communicate regulatory accounting risks and compliance issues to accounting leadership, and develop corrective actions to address identified gaps.
- Policy and Process Improvement: Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and workflows to strengthen compliance, consistency, and operational efficiency.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with land, operations, engineering, and other finance stakeholders to understand business activity and ensure accurate accounting treatment and timely reporting.
- Team Leadership: Supervise and develop accounting staff, provide day-to-day guidance and review, and help foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's degree in Accounting or CPA preferred
- 5-8+ years of accounting or finance experience within the upstream oil and gas industry
- Strong knowledge of regulatory reporting, royalty accounting, unclaimed property (escheat) requirements and severance tax accounting
- 2-5+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience required
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel
- Experience with a major ERP system required; SAP experience preferred
