Principal Piping Engineer

Role Overview

Mitsubishi Power Americas provides advanced power generation equipment and storage solutions for the energy industry. The Principal Piping Engineer develops piping system designs that meet code, contract, and schedule requirements for Gas Turbine power projects, with a primary focus on large frame industrial gas turbine piping systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure piping designs comply with ASME B31.1/B31.3 and project requirements.
  • Address technical inquiries from customers, vendors, and field teams.
  • Review contracts, schedules, and project documentation to define piping scope and deliverables.
  • Coordinate with the parent company to meet documentation and timeline needs.
  • Participate in project kickoffs and maintain piping documentation lists.
  • Develop and evaluate specifications for piping fabrication, supports, and specialty components.
  • Oversee subcontractor engineering and fabrication progress, including shop visits.
  • Review isometrics, P&IDs, equipment drawings, and other piping documentation.
  • Generate piping component lists from P&IDs and 3D models.
  • Recommend corrective actions to improve quality and address nonconformances.
  • Lead piping design efforts and perform design tasks as needed.
  • Prepare and review piping and mechanical calculations.
  • Conduct and evaluate pipe stress analyses using CAESAR II.
  • Prepare and review engineering work packages for third-party firms.
  • Apply materials knowledge to piping, valves, hardware, and support specifications.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and support process improvements.
  • Interface with EPCs, customers, and internal partners throughout project execution.
  • Support supplier qualification and review customer specifications.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold high ethical standards.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20%, including occasional international travel.


Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of 15 years of related technical experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, journals, and regulations.
  • Proficiency in writing reports, correspondence, and presenting technical information.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts including geometry, trigonometry, and statistics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for complex technical instructions.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling software, CAESAR II, spreadsheets, word processing, email, and PDF tools.
  • Knowledge of piping standards and codes such as ASME Section II, PCC, MSS-SP, and PFI.
  • Understanding of welding and NDE processes.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in moderate-to-loud environments where PPE may be required.
