Principal Electrical Engineer - Genset to join our team. This is a hybrid role based out of our
Plano, Texas location.
SCOPE:The Principal Electrical Engineer, Genset, serves as the U.S. electrical engineering lead for gas engine-based power generation systems (Genset) supporting data center and distributed energy applications. The role will lead the end-to-end electrical design, including generator systems, controls, protection, and cross-system interfaces from requirements through commissioning. This position leads the technical engineering activities related to UL certification and compliance, ensuring electrical design alignment with U.S. safety standards and regulatory requirements. This position also designs gas engine generator sets to meet customer requirements for grid interconnection, including PCC coordination, non-export control, and stable parallel operation of multiple units. This position collaborates with global stakeholders across Japan and the U.S. to align priorities, enable effective execution, and support MHIA's long-term business objectives.
The ideal candidate will have at least twelve (12) years of electrical engineering experience in industrial power systems, including at least six (6) years of experience with generator sets or genset-based power generation systems.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Lead Electrical Engineering for Gas Engine Sets- Lead electrical engineering from requirement definition through quotation and detailed design for gas engine sets
- Define electrical system architecture including generator, switchgear, protection, control panels, and auxiliary systems
- Manage subsystem interfaces (engine, generator, controller, PMS, BESS) and ensure system integration and design consistency
- Support FAT, commissioning (SAT), and troubleshooting including root cause analysis
- Contribute to standardization of electrical design and modular configurations
UL Certification and Compliance Leadership- Lead UL certification activities including coordination with NRTLs and certification strategy execution
- Translate UL, NEC, and NFPA requirements into engineering specifications and design requirements
- Prepare certification documentation and resolve technical issues to ensure compliance across design and testing phases
- Integrate compliance and verification requirements into design deliverables and FAT/SAT processes
- Interface with AHJs and support permitting activities
Grid Interconnection and Utility Coordination Leadership- Develop and validate parallel operation strategies for multiple gas engine generator sets, including load sharing, stability, and operational control.
- Lead grid interconnection design at PCC, including synchronization and protection coordination
- Define non-export/export control strategies and plant-level PMS integration with BESS and SCADA systems
- Ensure compliance with IEEE 1547 and utility interconnection requirements, including coordination with utilities and consultants
- Specify and validate protection schemes (relays, anti-islanding, breaker coordination)
- Support system performance validation under grid disturbances and commissioning activities
- This list of responsibilities is not all-inclusive, and an employee may be required to perform other relevant duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field
- Experience: Minimum of twelve (12) years of electrical engineering experience in industrial power systems, including at least six (6) years of experience with generator sets or genset-based power generation systems.
- Experience with generator sets, paralleling systems, and protection design
- Ability to review SLDs, wiring diagrams, protection coordination schemes
- Proven ability to translate regulatory requirements into engineering specifications
- Experience coordinating UL certification activities and related U.S. regulatory compliance requirements, including permitting support where applicable.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:o Experience in data center applications (non-export, microgrid, BESS integration)
o Knowledge of IEEE 1547 and utility interconnection processes
o Experience with UL2200, UL891, UL1558, UL508A
