Arnold & Porter is seeking an experienced Policy Advisor to join its Legislative and Public Policy Practice Group in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate brings deep experience navigating the federal legislative and regulatory process and a demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic advocacy plans.
The Legislative and Public Policy Practice Group is Chambers-rated among the leading legislative practices at national law firms. Our approximately 40-person team works in a high-energy, collaborative environment focused on exceptional client service. We provide congressional and regulatory advocacy for globally recognized brands, Fortune 500 companies, innovative start-ups, leading associations, utilities, manufacturers, healthcare systems, educational institutions, local governments, foreign governments, and coalitions.
This position is based in the Washington, DC office and follows a hybrid work schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise clients on federal legislative, regulatory, and public-policy matters.
- Develop and execute strategic advocacy plans tailored to client objectives.
- Lead client-service teams on discrete policy issues and advocacy initiatives.
- Monitor, analyze, and communicate developments in relevant policy areas.
- Work collaboratively with attorneys, policy professionals, and clients in a fast-paced environment.
- Manage and mentor junior-level staff, as appropriate.
- Produce clear, accurate, and high-quality written work products.
- Register on behalf of firm clients, as required, under the Lobbying Disclosure Act and the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum of eight years of experience in Congress, an Executive Branch department or agency, or government relations for a nonprofit or for-profit organization, trade association, or interest group.
- Strong knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory process.
- Demonstrated expertise in two or more of the following areas: appropriations, education, energy/environmental, national defense, tax, technology, or trade policy.
- Proven ability to develop and execute strategic advocacy plans.
- Experience managing junior-level staff and leading client-service teams.
- Strong strategic judgment, initiative, self-motivation, and drive to action.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality deliverables.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, decision-making, and multitasking skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while managing competing priorities.
- Willingness to register for firm clients under the Lobbying Disclosure Act and the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $200,000 to $225,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
