Plumbing Project Designer | Seattle, WA

IMEG is hiring a Plumbing Project Designer in Seattle, WA to lead design efforts as a project manager or lead designer for moderate complexity projects and collaborate with senior staff on the delivery of larger, high complexity projects. In this role, you will work closely with a team of engineers and consultants to deliver engineering solutions and advice that support positive client outcomes.

You will contribute to engineering analysis, design, and implementation oversight of plumbing and fire protection systems, while also supporting project planning, budgeting, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration. This role supports hospitality, mixed use, and government projects and advances high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

What You'll Do
  • Lead plumbing and fire protection system design for moderate-complexity projects and support larger, high-complexity project delivery with senior staff.
  • Perform engineering analysis and develop detailed plumbing and fire protection designs, specifications, and calculations in accordance with code requirements and IMEG standards.
  • Partner with clients to understand project needs, gather requirements, communicate technical information, and build strong working relationships.
  • Support consulting project execution as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead project planning, budgeting, and scheduling efforts to meet deadlines, objectives, percent complete targets, and fee expectations.
  • Document client design decisions and instructions and track project design progress.
  • Analyze engineering problems and develop practical, efficient solutions in collaboration with senior engineers and consultants.
  • Conduct in-process reviews of plumbing and fire protection designs, calculations, and specifications.
  • Apply quality control processes to help ensure designs meet IMEG quality standards, industry standards, and client requirements.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and plumbing engineering best practices, and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.
  • Prioritize safety and identify potential risks associated with plumbing systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, project managers, and other cross-functional partners to deliver integrated solutions, identify project issues, and support bidding and construction administration.

Education and Experience

Qualifications (one of the following):
  • Option A: Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent required
  • Option A: 5 years of experience minimum required, 6 preferred, in the building design consulting industry
  • Option B: 9 years of experience minimum required, 10 preferred, in the building design consulting or construction industry

Skills and Abilities
  • Expertise in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications
  • Strong technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics as they relate to plumbing and fire protection design for buildings
  • Strong training and mentoring skills
  • Expertise in industry standard engineering software and tools.
  • Mastery of code calculations for domestic water, waste, and vent systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of specialty plumbing systems (medical gas, laboratory gas, high rise, rainwater/grey water systems) as applicable based on team market focus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) software
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to travel up to 15% with occasional overnight stays

Preferred
  • Engineering In Training (EIT) Certification preferred
  • ASPE Certified Plumbing Design preferred
  • Associates degree, or certificate, in Building Information Modeling (BIM) or Engineering preferred

  • You will join a broad integrated MEP team with strong emphasis on multifamily housing, mixed-use, hospitality, transit, and civic/public work. The active portfolio includes recurring mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology scope, with additional support in energy modeling, commissioning, telecom, security, and architectural lighting on larger coordinated efforts.
  • The team brings particular strength in urban residential developments, mixed-use projects, transportation and access improvements, parks, school district work, and hospitality renovations, with experience handling complex, highly coordinated projects.
  • Recent work includes Overlake East Phase I, Housing / Multi-family, and Sound Transit Auburn Station Parking & Access Improvement, Transportation.


State of Washington Salary Range: $86,000-$120,000 per year

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.

Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate's experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.

Other rewards may include annual bonuses and stock ownership options.
