Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking highly motivated Mechanical Piping Designers to join our Project Delivery Group (PDG) at our office in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Hatch PDG provides you with an opportunity to be a leader within an integrated team which provides engineering services for projects within the USA Region and across the globe. Working closely with the engineers and designers within the group, the Mechanical/Piping Designer will be an integral part of the team working on challenging projects. This position will allow the candidate to directly apply and develop his or her knowledge in facility layout, equipment modeling and piping system design, while developing new skills. The candidate will help drive the Hatch Digital Project Delivery program, which includes intelligent 3D modeling, data centric multi-discipline engineering, and integrated delivery models. Hatch also offers exposure to the latest 3D modeling and analysis tools to support project completion. This position reports to the Regional Mechnical and Piping Manager (USA).

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Develop plant 3D layouts for equipment and process/utility piping systems with quality and economy constantly in mind.
  • Understand ASME piping codes is expected as well as other knowledge of industry/regulatory codes, standards and standard drafting conventions.
  • Lead and coordinate design activities with other members of the piping project team, as well as other design disciplines, to ensure proper interface and compliance with project objectives.
  • Understand and follow established company workflows.
  • Prepare and deliver plant design documents (plans and piping isometrics).
  • Be in charge of isometric production control and monitoring
  • Prepare and understand of PFDs and P&IDs
  • Participate in technical meetings related to project progress as required.
  • Check / Initiate comment drawings and project documents.
  • Comment on vendor drawings as received.
  • Modify and revise design documents as required.
  • Perform field surveys, when necessary, to collect information, or to update the design documents to "As Built" status when required by terms of the project contract.


You bring to the role/Required:

  • Diploma, Associates Degree or equivalent in engineering design or drafting.
  • 3+ years of experience in either mechanical and/or piping design.
  • Extensive experience with 2D and 3D CAD software (Microstation, AutoCAD, OpenPlant) is required (strict adherence to Hatch and Client drafting standards will be expected).
  • Knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards, as well as standard drafting conventions.
  • Excellent safety awareness.
  • Ability to motivate individuals to attain quality, cost and schedule objectives
  • Strong deliverable focus, ability to plan the work
  • A high degree of understanding of inter-discipline dependencies related to the discipline
  • Well-developed communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
