Board-Certified in Surgical Critical Care
The Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Surgeon provides comprehensive trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care services across the WVU Medicine system. The surgeon serves as a key member assisting in the development of the ACS/Trauma program and supports progression toward Level II Trauma Center designation. This physician will provide operative and non-operative management of trauma and emergency surgical patients while helping establish and support an integrated ACS and SICU model.
Essential Functions
Trauma and Acute Care Surgery
- Provide 24/7 trauma and emergency general surgery coverage as part of the ACS call rotation.
- Evaluate and manage trauma activations and emergency surgical consultations.
- Perform operative and non-operative management of trauma and acute surgical conditions.
- Provide inpatient management for ACS patients from admission through discharge.
- Collaborate with emergency medicine, hospital medicine, critical care, and surgical specialists.
Surgical Critical Care
- Provide care for critically ill surgical and trauma patients.
- Participate in development and medical oversight of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).
- Direct evidence-based management of surgical critical care patients.
- Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds.
- Support system-wide critical care initiatives and trauma readiness activities.
Program Development
- Support development and growth of the Acute Care Surgery service line.
- Assist with trauma program readiness efforts associated with Level II Trauma Center designation.
- Participate in quality improvement, peer review, morbidity and mortality conferences, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop ACS clinical pathways, protocols, and operational standards.
- Support trauma, ACS, and critical care services across multiple WVU Medicine facilities as needed.
Education and Leadership
- Mentor APPs, residents, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in physician leadership activities.
- Support ongoing trauma and critical care education efforts.
- Engage in committees and medical staff activities.
Qualifications
Required
- MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
- Board Certified in General Surgery.
- Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care.
- Board Certified in Surgical Critical Care.
- Eligible for unrestricted West Virginia medical licensure.
- DEA registration.
- ACLS / ATLS certification.
