What you'll do - Assesses client needs by methods such as consulting with the client regarding needs, goals, objectives and extent of disability, and measuring the client to establish dimensions of the orthosis.
- Designs and/or selects appropriate orthosis by methods such as taking an impression of the appropriate body area, making a position mould and modifying the cast in accordance with anatomical and physiological requirements.
- Communicates with technical staff regarding fabrication requirements of orthoses and demonstrates fabrication procedures as necessary.
- Fits and adjusts the orthosis by methods such as meeting with the client and educating the client in the proper usage and care of the orthosis to ensure the client reaches the maximum potential and comfort level.
- Makes recommendations for repair and/or replacement of orthoses by methods such as examining and evaluating the orthosis to ensure client safety.
- Communicates with clients/families, other health team members and the community by methods such as receiving referrals, providing information to assist in making informed decisions, participating in interdisciplinary team meetings, and collaborating with team members in the planning, coordination and evaluation of client service.
- Prepares and maintains records by documenting assessment, recommendations, evaluation, modification(s), and clients' goals to provide evidence and rationale that support findings. Completes reports such as workload statistics.
- Maintains knowledge of current equipment, technology and design techniques in the orthotics field by methods such as reviewing literature in specialty areas, consulting with clinical and community experts, manufacturers and dealers, and attending workshops and conferences.
What you bring Qualifications
- Completion of recognized Orthotics Program and two years' recent experience in a rehabilitation health care setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Certification in Orthotics from the Canadian Board for Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotists (CBCPO) and eligible for membership in the Canadian Association for Prosthetics and Orthotics (CAPO).
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within Program Name Here contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system.
