Description

The Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive, evidence-based routine and acute care to university students within Student Health Services. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, administrative staff, Counseling Services, and other campus and community partners, the Nurse Practitioner supports the health and well-being of students and their ability to participate fully in their academic experience.

The Nurse Practitioner independently evaluates, diagnoses, and manages a broad range of acute and chronic health conditions within the scope of advanced practice nursing and applicable state and federal law. The position emphasizes accessible, confidential, student-centered care appropriate to the needs of a diverse young-adult population.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, evaluate, treat and manage acute and chronic illness, disease and injury, independently and/or in consultation/referral with another health care provider.
  • Provide ongoing management of appropriate chronic health conditions and coordinate care with outside specialists and primary care providers when indicated.
  • Perform comprehensive and focused histories and physical examinations and develop individualized plans of care.
  • Provide preventive health services, health maintenance, risk assessment, screening, and health education.
  • Provide sexual and reproductive health services, including contraception counseling and management, STI screening and treatment, gynecologic evaluation, and other services within the provider's scope of practice and competency.
  • Evaluate common behavioral and mental health concerns, assess safety and level of care, provide appropriate treatment within scope, and coordinate or refer to Counseling Services, psychiatric providers, emergency services, or community resources when indicated.
  • Provide immunizations, tuberculosis screening and evaluation, and other health services required for academic programs, clinical placements, athletics, travel, or other university activities as appropriate.
  • Order, perform and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies including point-of-care testing, laboratory studies and imaging and provide appropriate follow-up of results in a timely manner.
  • Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions in accordance with professional standards, applicable laws and regulations, organizational policies, and scope of practice.
  • Perform minor office procedures such as biopsies, suturing, lesion removals, splinting and immobilizing.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic health record consistent with clinical, regulatory, billing, and institutional requirements.
  • Educate students regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, preventive care, self-management, and appropriate use of healthcare resources.
  • Provide care that is culturally responsive, trauma-informed, inclusive, and respectful of students from diverse backgrounds, identities, abilities, and life experiences.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and protect health information in accordance with HIPAA, applicable state and federal law, and University policies.
  • Teach nursing staff, medical assistants and others clinical instructions as required.
  • Confer with UNE athletic trainers to consult on specific student-athletes, discuss treatment plans, exchange information, and other related tasks necessary to provide care to student-athletes.
  • Maintain required professional licensure, certification, continuing education, and competencies.
  • Participate in staff meetings, peer review, clinical case review, quality improvement and other departmental activities as assigned.
  • Serve as a clinical resource to Student Health staff and, when appropriate, other University departments while maintaining appropriate boundaries regarding confidential student health information.
  • Maintain a current CPR BLS/ACLS certification as appropriate.
  • Understand and comply with Universal Precautions, MSDS and HAZCOM policies and procedures as part of UNE's comprehensive OSHA compliance program.
  • Understand and comply with UNE Safety manual, paying special attention to Responsibilities Section Chapter on Blood Borne Pathogens, and Chapter on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Understand and comply with the policies and procedures and applicable clinical practice guidelines of Student Health Services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Current unrestricted Maine Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license.
  • Active DEA registration.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in routine care, family medicine, internal medicine, adolescent/young-adult medicine, urgent care, or a comparable outpatient setting.
  • Ability to exercise independent clinical judgment and recognize conditions requiring consultation, referral, or a higher level of care.
  • Experience using an electronic health record and familiarity with clinical documentation, coding, and third-party billing.
  • Current CPR BLS certification.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Ability to explain medical problems and treatments in accurate and understandable lay language.
