Summary of Job Purpose

Responsible for the excellence of nursing care and staff performance by implementing the goals of the hospital and the individual unit. Maintains the day to day operational aspect of the unit in conjunction with other units and areas of the hospital.

General Management Responsibilities

  1. Mission
    • Demonstrates leadership and commitment to the Hospital Core Values and Mission.
  2. Leadership
    • Provides leadership, training, and support for staff by establishing performance expectations and providing constructive feedback to reorganize and/or improve positive performance.
    • Establishes both short and long-term plans to meet department needs. Shows foresight in recognizing problems.
    • Effectively communicates Hospital information, as well as departmental expectations and goals, to all staff by conducting regular staff meetings, posting appropriate memos, and holding individual communications sessions as needed.
    • Implements policies and procedures in a fair and equitable manner.
    • Effectively manages conflict resolution and conducts formal personnel counseling when needed.
  3. Operations/Financial
    • Manages the financial resources of the department effectively and efficiently.
    • Prepares and manages annual departmental budget, determining the needs of the department and logically communicates reasonable requests to upper management.
    • Is fiscally responsible with expenditure and shows a willingness to continuously improve.
  4. Human Resources
    • Recruits, interviews and hires competent candidates for department positions, who will be supportive of the Hospital Mission and Core Values.
    • Actively works to improve the working environment to aid in the retention of staff.
    • Ensures proper orientation for all new hires.
    • Supports and participates in Hospital recognition programs.
    • Completes Initial and Annual Performance Appraisals within the required time frames.
    • Ensures staff completion of mandatory education requirements.
    • Ensures staff maintains updated professional licensure and certifications and forwards documents to Human Resources.
    • Actively works with Employee Health to ensure that employees adhere to DOH/DNV/Infection Control Regulations.
  5. Staff Development
    • Provides ongoing training to staff to ensure productivity and knowledge.
    • Ensures employee competency by providing ongoing staff development and continuing education opportunities, including staff participation in all mandated and regulatory programs.
  6. Quality Improvement
    • Implements and monitors patient safety initiatives to meet established goals.
    • Reviews incident reports and patient complaints, follows up appropriately.
    • Maintains target levels of customer satisfaction. Implements initiatives in the department to improve service to customers.

Essential Job Responsibilities

The following is a summary of the essential functions of this job. The employee may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of unit to include clinical excellence and effective collaboration in the interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellence in clinical competence in all aspects of assigned unit. Serves as a role model and clinical resource person, especially for all new staff.
  • Promotes and develops open communication between all staff on all shifts of assigned unit.
  • Staffing assignments are patient care centered and based on patient's acuity - assures this is followed on all shifts. Facilitates deliverance of excellence in patient care issues.
  • Responsible for EMS Coordinator day-to-day operations. Collaborate with Administrative Director to ensure that EMS Coordinator is addressing appropriate EMS issues.
  • Assures that Nursing processes are applied to each patient appropriately. Sees that documentation is complete.
  • Assists and encourages staff to reach optimum potential, especially in areas of charge, relief charge, QA/QI and educational development.
  • Maintains a safe physical environment for patients, staff, family, and visitors by observing all staff maintain infection control standards.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Director in the evaluation, professional development and discipline of all staff on unit.
  • Collaborate with Administrative Director in developing and implementing unit specific goals while adhering to hospital wide goals. Includes EMS goals and QA/QI activities. Attends M.A.C. Committee.
  • Develops and updates policy and procedures specific to the E.D. standards and ensures that they are implemented and followed by staff.
  • Works in conjunction with Medical Director of unit to coordinate the E.D. management meetings. Attends Acute Care Committee.
  • Oversee the unit schedule to ensure staffing pattern is adequate for the unit needs.
  • Assists in recruitment, interviewing and selection of staff for the unit and oversees their preceptorship on the unit.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing; is pursuing or has achieved B.S.N.; ACLS certified

Experience:

3-5 yrs. critical care background; experience in Q.A. and patient care management

Training/License:

CEN preferred/Current Licensed NYS Registered Nurse

Other:

Has demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development standards excellence as a nursing practitioner with leadership qualities. BLS Certification
