Description & Requirements

Mechanical & Piping Engineer

Location: Montreal, QC

Type: Permanent Full-time

This job posting is also available in English. Both postings are for the same position.

The Mechanical & Piping Engineer will play a key role in delivering mechanical engineering design and technical support for studies and detailed engineering projects within the mining and heavy industrial sectors. This role reports directly to the Lead Discipline Mechanical.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of mechanical systems with a strong focus on material handling systems, platework design, plant layout, and piping coordination. This role offers the opportunity to be involved throughout the full project lifecycle - from studies and design development through procurement, construction, and commissioning.

The role is ideal for a hands-on and adaptable engineer who enjoys working across both mechanical and piping-related scopes, collaborating with internal teams, clients, vendors, and site personnel to deliver high-quality engineering solutions in a fast-paced EPCM environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver mechanical engineering design and calculations for mining and heavy industrial projects, with a strong focus on material handling systems, plant layout, platework, conveyors, pumps, and related equipment
  • Contribute to the development and coordination of 3D plant layouts in collaboration with piping, structural, electrical, and process disciplines
  • Support piping design and coordination activities, including routing, layout integration, and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables such as datasheets, specifications, calculations, scopes of work, equipment lists, schematics, and technical reports
  • Coordinate with vendors, clients, designers, and multidisciplinary teams throughout design and procurement phases
  • Support and guide designers/drafters in the development of plant and system designs using 2D and 3D CAD tools
  • Participate in technical bid evaluations, vendor reviews, and equipment selection activities
  • Review client specifications and technical documentation to support practical, efficient, and maintainable design solutions
  • Recommend design improvements to optimize quality, operability, and project execution
  • Support project execution activities including field support, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting when required
  • Contribute across both mechanical and piping-related scopes depending on project and business needs

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Member of a Professional Engineering association (or eligible for registration), with preference given to candidates eligible for the OIQ
  • 3 to 7 years of experience in a similar role within the mineral processing or mining sectors, with experience in heavy industrial plant environments considered an asset
  • Experience supporting detailed engineering, construction, and commissioning activities, including onsite exposure
  • Strong experience with plant layout and material handling systems in mining or industrial environments
  • Good understanding of piping systems design and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Experience preparing mechanical engineering deliverables for engineering studies and projects
  • Solid understanding of applicable engineering standards, codes, and regulations
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation
  • Curious, motivated, and eager to continue learning and developing your skills
  • Humble, collaborative, and open to feedback, with a team-first mindset
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment where technical discussions and team exchanges are part of day-to-day work
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proactive and solutions-oriented, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and project needs
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, and focused on delivering high-quality work
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment
  • Analytical and capable of solving complex technical problems
  • Accountable and results-driven, with a strong sense of ownership over your work
  • Able to deliver quality work within project schedules and budgets

Assets

  • Exposure to flotation and DMS plants, slurry and liquid pumping systems, and bulk materials handling
  • Experience with platework design and material handling equipment such as chutes, bins, hoppers, and transfer points
  • Experience working in an EPCM environment, particularly with piping layout integration and coordination
  • Familiarity with CAD software and 3D model navigation tools such as AutoCAD and plant design software

Position details:

  • 40 hours per week
  • Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada
  • Competitive salary tailored to your skills and experience
  • Full insurance coverage paid by Primero from day one
  • Retirement plan with employer matching contribution
