Full Job Description
Position Overview:
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design of system components for high temperature gas reactors (HTGR's) and light water reactors (LWR's) ranging from space to terrestrial applications. You will work with a matrixed organization consisting of engineers of various disciplines, data scientists, technicians and project management teams. The job is dynamic and requires attention to detail, being a self-starter, taking ownership of designs from concept to realization, working with and establishing requirements, working within differing codes (e.g. ASME, SAE, NASA) while adhering to project and schedule milestones.

Your Day to Day as a Mechanical Design Engineer:
  • Perform detail component, system and design engineering activities including drawings, specifications, calculations, and reports.
  • Perform component design, with an understanding of incorporating assembly, testing and inspection of mechanical components and system functions within the design.
  • Implement design control and configuration control concepts.
  • Implement concepts of design for manufacturing and system operations.
  • Learn a variety of new procedures, processes and tools while maintaining various stages of production.
  • Specify procurement requirements for mechanical components or system operability.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline is required.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience is required.
  • Must have experience in nuclear reactor core components, reactor vessel, reactivity control devices, and reactor vessel head components.
  • Must have a working knowledge of ASME Code, Section III and VIII, specifically.
  • Must have SolidWorks 3D modeling experience.
  • Knowledge of GD&T principles and application is required.
  • Must have general knowledge of project engineering activities (task plans, schedules, etc.).
  • Ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication is required.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced team environment but also have the ability to work independently.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Pay: $85,000 - $134,000

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $85,000 and $134,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
