Hitachi Energy is looking for a FACTS Controls Engineer to join our growing Power Quality Solutions (PQS) team in Cary, North Carolina. As a global leader in Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), Hitachi Energy delivers innovative technologies that improve the security, flexibility, and capacity of electrical transmission networks across the world.
In this role, you will help develop and implement advanced control solutions that serve as the "brain" behind FACTS installations. Working with Hitachi Energy's industry-leading MACH control system, you will design, program, test, verify, and commission sophisticated control applications that support utility customers and the evolving energy landscape. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project managers, customers, and global colleagues to solve complex technical challenges and deliver impactful solutions.
This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge power electronics and control technologies, contribute to mission-critical infrastructure projects, and influence the future of grid modernization. The role follows a hybrid work model, with an expectation of approximately three to four days per week onsite in Cary, NC, while maintaining flexibility to support business needs. You will also gain exposure to international collaboration through partnerships with teams across North America, Sweden, and India.
Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures and guidelines.
How You'll Make an ImpactDesign, develop, implement, and maintain control algorithms for FACTS applications.
Program and configure the MACH control system to meet customer and project requirements.
Perform control logic development, debugging, testing, and deployment activities.
Conduct Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing using real-time simulators.
Create models and simulations for power electronics and power system applications.
Support factory acceptance testing, commissioning activities, and site startup efforts.
Prepare technical documentation, customer submittals, test procedures, and test records.
Collaborate with project teams, customers, and global engineering groups to deliver successful project outcomes.
Master's degree or Ph.D. in Power Systems, Power Electronics, Control Theory, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
5+ years of controls engineering experience, preferably within power systems applications.
2+ years of programming experience with the ability to work across multiple programming environments and languages.
Experience designing and testing PI, PID, or similar control algorithms.
Strong knowledge of power systems, control theory, and power electronics applications.
Experience with MATLAB, real-time simulators, or similar modeling and simulation tools. FACTS, HVDC, or utility power systems experience is highly preferred.
