Job Description

We are looking for a talented Electronic Systems Engineer - Software to join our team specializing in engineering for our Cummins' business in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Drive software quality and reliability by investigating product software issues, identifying root causes, implementing corrective actions, and owning problem resolution through to completion.

Deliver high-quality software features and releases by collaborating with product and software development teams to develop, test, verify, and integrate software components that meet product requirements.

Influence software architecture and design decisions by applying systems-level knowledge to requirements, architecture, development, and testing activities that impact product performance and quality.

Enhance development efficiency and effectiveness by supporting and improving software development processes, tools, and practices, including coding, compiling, testing, static analysis, and integration activities.

Lead resolution of complex technical challenges by making sound engineering decisions and driving solutions for software components, subsystems, and products with increasing levels of complexity and ambiguity.

Strengthen cross-functional collaboration by partnering with engineering, product, and technical teams to coordinate software integration efforts and ensure alignment across business units and platforms.

Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to optimize systems, workflows, and engineering processes that improve product outcomes and team performance.

Support team success and technical growth by influencing project outcomes, coordinating work with technicians and student employees when needed, and contributing expertise that advances team goals and software engineering excellence.

Responsibilities

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Leverage systems engineering expertise to translate stakeholder needs into clear, verifiable requirements, develop product architectures, evaluate design trade-offs, and ensure solutions align with product strategies and customer expectations.

Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills by using modeling, simulation, statistical methods, verification and validation processes, and failure mode avoidance techniques to improve product performance, reliability, and quality.

Collaborate effectively across functions and communicate with influence by partnering with diverse stakeholders, leading design integration efforts, documenting technical decisions, and clearly conveying complex information to support informed decision-making.

Drive execution and continuous growth by managing product development activities, monitoring risks and requirements throughout the product lifecycle, delivering results in challenging situations, and actively expanding your technical and professional capabilities.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:
  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred.


Additional Details:
  • 2 -3 years of experience in embedded software development, preferably in the automotive, industrial, or embedded systems domain.
  • Strong programming skills in C; knowledge of C++ is an advantage.
  • Strong experience in developing software for microcontroller-based embedded systems (e.g., Infineon AURIX, NXP, Renesas, STMicroelectronics, TI).
  • Understanding of embedded microcontrollers, memory architecture, interrupts, timers, and peripheral interfaces.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS, AUTOSAR OS, or similar.
  • Good understanding of embedded software architecture, software design, and coding standards (MISRA C).
  • Experience using debugging tools such as Lauterbach Trace32, JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, SPI, I2C, UART, and Ethernet is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of AUTOSAR architecture, including BSW, MCAL, RTE, and software configuration, is desirable.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic protocols such as UDS (ISO 14229) and OBD is a plus.
  • Exposure to automotive standards such as ISO 26262, MISRA C, and software development lifecycle processes is preferred.
  • Experience with version control systems (Git), and configuration management tools.
  • Familiarity with software development, unit testing, integration testing, and debugging techniques.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python for automation is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of automotive functional safety (ISO 26262) and cybersecurity (ISO/SAE 21434) is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
