The Opportunity: Borderless AI is looking for an experienced, hands-on
Controller to build our accounting and finance function from the ground up as we scale. This is a foundational hire for a Series B/C startup: you'll take direct ownership of financial reporting, tax, transfer pricing policies, accounts payable and receivable, and accounting policies, standing up the systems, processes, and controls a fast-growing, global business needs. This role is a great fit for someone who has built an accounting or finance function from 0 to 1 before, thrives in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment, and enjoys building order and rigor out of complexity.
Roles & Responsibilities: - Build and lead Borderless AI's accounting and finance function from the ground up, establishing the systems, processes, and internal controls needed to support the company's growth.
- Own financial reporting: prepare accurate, timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, and manage the month-end and year-end close process.
- Own tax: manage corporate tax compliance and filings across jurisdictions, coordinate with external tax advisors, and ensure Borderless AI meets its federal, provincial/state, and international tax obligations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain transfer pricing policies that support the company's global operations and ensure compliance with cross-border tax requirements.
- Own accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely and accurate vendor payments, customer invoicing, and collections.
- Own cash management and forecasting - tracking burn rate, running runway analysis, and building cash flow forecasts to keep leadership ahead of the company's cash position.
- Design, document, and maintain accounting policies and procedures that scale with the business and support audit readiness.
- Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning to inform strategic decision-making.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, banking partners, and other finance-related vendors.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements across the jurisdictions in which Borderless AI operates.
- Build, mentor, and eventually lead a growing accounting and finance team as the company scales.
Qualifications: - 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including experience at a Series B/C or similar growth-stage startup.
- Proven track record of building an accounting/finance function from 0 to 1 - designing processes, systems, and controls from scratch.
- Deep expertise across financial reporting, tax, transfer pricing, and accounts payable/receivable.
- CPA designation (or equivalent) required.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and/or IFRS; experience with multi-jurisdiction or international accounting is a plus given Borderless AI's global operations.
- Experience developing and implementing accounting policies in a fast-growing, high-ambiguity environment.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- High degree of ownership, integrity, and attention to detail.
- Willingness to work in person, five days a week, at Borderless AI's Toronto HQ.

Salary Range: $130,000.00 - $180,000.00
