The ideal candidate will be dedicated to automation engineering, process control, and project execution activities to effectively support ArcelorMittal Calvert's business objectives. The Automation Engineering Specialist will contribute to safety, quality, reliability, and operational performance.

The Basics
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or instrumentation engineering with 10 years of relevant industrial experience, or a Trade School Diploma with 20 years of relevant industrial experience, preferably in steelmaking, heavy industrial, manufacturing, or large-scale capital projects
  • Experienced in electrical automation, controls, manufacturing, commissioning, or service for industrial automation systems
  • Experience working on large-scale steel industry capital projects from concept through commissioning
  • Experience with automation systems in heavy industrial environments; steelmaking and caster experience preferred
  • Level 1 / Level 2 software programming and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience coordinating engineering, construction, maintenance, operations, OEMs, and contractors
  • Strong understanding of industrial automation, electrical controls, instrumentation, PLCs, HMIs, drives, and industrial communication systems
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong project management, organizational, and technical problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint

The Extras

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Lead automation engineering activities for the Complex II EAF/Caster Project, from concept and FEED through detailed design, construction, commissioning, startup, and final acceptance
  • Provide automation engineering leadership for EAF, Caster, FES, Water Systems, and associated auxiliary equipment and processes
  • Participate in engineering, construction, installation, integration, testing, commissioning, and startup of steelmaking and caster automation systems
  • Provide technical support and consultation to management in Level 1 and Level 2 electrical and automation disciplines
  • Coordinate engineering activities supporting the implementation of automation system and equipment modifications, upgrades, and improvements
  • Perform technical analysis, develop proposals and alternatives, support cost estimates, and coordinate factory testing and commissioning activities
  • Coordinate third-party engineering and automation contractors from scope definition through project closeout
  • Ensure new automation deployments and modifications are properly integrated with existing plant processes and systems without adversely affecting production or equipment operation
  • Establish minimum technical requirements for the purchase, modification, and implementation of automation equipment and systems
  • Develop and maintain technical standards based on applicable national, international, and corporate standards while incorporating new technologies where appropriate
  • Lead and support the design, programming, testing, integration, and startup of PLC- and HMI-based control systems
  • Design, troubleshoot, and commission AC drive systems, electrical controls, VFD/VSD systems, and related PLC regulation systems
  • Support the integration and commissioning of industrial instrumentation, process control, communication, and safety systems
  • Review P&IDs, electrical schematics, control narratives, equipment specifications, network architecture, and automation design documentation
  • Support Level 1/Level 2 architecture, process sequences, control logic, HMI functionality, data collection, and system integration
  • Lead FAT activities with OEMs and suppliers to verify functionality, performance, communications, controls integration, and compliance with project requirements
  • Support site acceptance testing, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and final system turnover
  • Maintain company technical documentation and ensure documentation remains accurate, current, and readily available
  • Provide technical support to the project management organization from feasibility and design through final acceptance testing
  • Ensure proper technical documentation is completed and updated following system modifications and commissioning activities
  • Identify automation, electrical, controls, instrumentation, and integration issues and work with engineering, OEMs, contractors, and operations to develop practical solutions
  • Coordinate automation activities with mechanical, piping, civil, structural, refractory, electrical, and other project disciplines
  • Provide regular project and technical updates to internal customers and stakeholders
  • Coordinate and execute multiple projects with minimal supervision
  • Prepare and present technical reports, project updates, findings, recommendations, and performance trends by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information
  • Support development of project schedules, work plans, estimates, technical scopes, and execution strategies as required
  • Support management in optimizing equipment quality, cost, availability, reliability, and performance
  • Lead, support, participate in, and develop continuous improvement programs and project teams
  • Coordinate and direct personnel, contractors, vendors, and technical resources as required
