DescriptionAs part of a multi-year, cross College-level effort to become global leaders in Water and Earth System Predictions and Community Resilience Research with a particular emphasis on Hydrology and Water Security, the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (https://ou.edu/coe/cees; CEES) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) welcomes applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position focused on the broad areas of
hydrology and water security from candidates whose experiences and interests have prepared them to be engaged in scientific discovery, education, developing the next generation of thought leaders, and service to society. The search is coordinated by the Gallogly College of Engineering.
QualificationsHydrology and Water Security - Required and preferred qualificationsOne (1) tenure-track position is available in the broad areas of observational hydrology, modeling, and data assimilation. The successful candidate will become an important member of the CEES faculty, with key collaborations with the vibrant Norman hydrometeorology community, which includes several university research centers, NOAA partners, and private companies. The successful candidate will work within this collaborative environment to increase our understanding of the energy and water cycles from local to global spatial scales and weather to climate temporal scales.
Required qualificationsApplicants must have completed their PhD by the time of appointment and earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. More specifically, we are seeking applicants with interests and demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: physics-based surface and groundwater hydrology; multisensory observations (satellite, radar, in-situ gauges) of hydrologic processes; land surface modeling at the watershed and continental scale; use of data assimilation and machine learning to ingest observations to improve model performance; application to water supply and management issues; new pedagogy for hydrology and water resources engineering education; sustainable and resilient water supply systems. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to communicate and distribute new insights to the scientific and engineering communities, and work with relevant stakeholders and the public to help support sustainable, resilient, and robust societal planning efforts.
Preferred qualificationsThe following qualifications are preferred:
- Undergraduate teaching experience in core and elective courses
- Graduate mentoring experience, including classroom and online teaching
- Experience in hydrologic research or related fields
- Evidence of interdisciplinary collaborations in hydrology or related fields
- Interest in the development, validation, and improvement of observational hydrology, modeling, and data assimilation techniques.
Application Instructions Application Materials Requested: To apply, please submit, as one single PDF file, a comprehensive cover letter (not to exceed 5 pages), current curriculum vitae, and a list of at least 3 people who can serve as references (with e-mail addresses and telephone numbers) to https://apply.interfolio.com/196044. The cover letter may address examples of approach to teaching (e.g., past instructional and mentorship experiences, pedagogical philosophy, and plans/goals for teaching at OU, including existing and proposed courses), strategies and plans for advising a varied cohort of undergraduate and graduate students), research (e.g., prior contributions to research and goals for developing a research program at OU), service (e.g., a vision for internal service to the academic unit, the College and the University, and for external service to our scientific community and other stakeholders), and graduate student mentorship.
Screening of applications will begin on November 15, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. The search committee chair Dr. Randall Kolar ([redacted]) can answer any questions about the position and our organization.
