Full Job Description
Manager, Workers' Compensation Claims

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Workers' Compensation Claims Manager to lead and elevate our claims program. This role plays a critical part in managing claim outcomes, controlling costs, and driving consistency across a complex, multi-state portfolio.

You will lead internal claims professionals, partner closely with Third-Party Administrators (TPAs), and collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, HR, Safety, and Legal. This role blends technical claims expertise with financial and portfolio-level insight and data-driven decision-making, including understanding claim development, cost trends across policy years, and how individual claim outcomes influence overall portfolio performance and financial results, helping to improve claim outcomes and reduce total cost of risk.

Key Responsibilities
• Provide day-to-day leadership, direction, and support to the internal Workers' Compensation claims team, ensuring alignment in approach, consistency in execution, and clear accountability across claim handling activities.
• Serve as a key resource to the team on complex or higher-exposure claims, offering perspective and guidance to support well-informed and consistent decision-making.
• Support oversight of the Workers' Compensation claims portfolio from a financial perspective, including monitoring overall claim exposure, cost trends, and development across policy years.
• Work closely with Third-Party Administrators (TPAs), actuaries, and internal stakeholders, including Finance, to evaluate impacts of total incurred costs, reserve development, and emerging trends, helping to promote financial transparency and consistency.
• Develop an understanding of how individual claim performance contributes to aggregate portfolio results and use that insight to support more consistent, disciplined decision-making across the claims function.
• Actively utilize and support the use and improvement of RMIS and TPA systems for claim management, reporting, and oversight, ensuring data is accurate, accessible, and effectively used to support decision-making.
• Analyze claims data, reports, and trends to identify patterns and opportunities for improved claim outcomes and operational efficiency.
• Support the development and use of reporting tools and dashboards that enhance visibility into claim performance, financial exposure, and key risk indicators.
• Identify opportunities to enhance claims management through the use of emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, automation, and improved data utilization.
• Contribute to initiatives that improve efficiency, increase transparency, and support a more proactive and predictive approach to managing total cost of risk.
• Review and appropriately challenge claim strategies, reserve adjustments, and settlement recommendations to ensure alignment with known exposure and company objectives.
• Approve claim decisions within established authority levels and escalate higher-exposure or complex matters as needed.
• Partner with Claims Team to support effective and consistent claim handling, including timely progression, appropriate reserving practices, and alignment on settlement approach.
• Participate in targeted claim review discussions, focusing on higher-impact claims and ensuring clear direction and follow-through.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including Safety (EHS), HR, Legal, and Finance, to support coordinated responses to workplace incidents and claims.
• Support compliance with applicable Workers' Compensation requirements across jurisdictions, including state-specific rules, federal programs (e.g., Longshore), and monopolistic state environments.
• Provide limited oversight of international insured claims managed by third-party administrators, including monitoring activity and supporting coordination on Employer's Liability (EL) claims in jurisdictions such as the United Kingdom.
• Maintain effective working relationships with TPAs, carriers, and external partners to support consistent claim outcomes and program performance.
• Perform other related duties and participate in Risk Management initiatives as needed to support the overall effectiveness of the claims function.

What You Bring
• 5-8+ years of Workers' Compensation claims or risk management experience
• Experience working in multi-state or complex claims environments
• Demonstrated leadership or oversight of claims professionals
• Ability to provide perspective beyond day-to-day claim handling and support consistent decision-making across multiple claims or claim groups
• Strong understanding of claims handling, reserving, and settlement strategies
• Experience managing internal teams and TPAs and collaborating with external partners
• Financial acumen and understanding of claim cost drivers, including the ability to consider broader trends and impacts to overall claim costs or portfolio performance
• Proficiency in RMIS or claims systems and data analysis with the ability to use data and reporting to support insight, consistency, and improved decision-making
• Interest in and willingness to leverage emerging technologies, including data tools, automation, or AI-enabled solutions, to improve efficiency and enhance claims insight
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
