Welding Engineering Unit Manager - BWX Technologies, Inc. - Barberton, OhioThe Weld Engineering Unit Manager leads a diverse team of welding engineers, technicians, and specialists within the Welding Engineering department, ensuring alignment with company and customer objectives related to the fabrication of NOG components. This role is responsible for managing staffing, welding processes, quality, safety, schedule, and cost to achieve high-quality weld fabrication.This supervisory role requires collaboration across departments to optimize weld process efficiency, reduce defects, and support future welding technology initiatives.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Responsible for leading a diverse group of welding engineers, technicians and other specialists within the Welding Engineering (W.E.) department to achieve all company and customer commitments as related to the fabrication of NOG components. Responsible for ensuring the W.E. unit is properly aligned and supportive of all company objectives as it relates to the development, staffing, execution and overall quality of the weld process and associated operations. This alignment includes all aspects of Safety, Quality, Schedule and Cost associated with the weld process.
- Coordinates and controls welding engineers' job functions to provide uniform, coordinated direction of the company's short and long range goals.
- Assures staffing levels to support administrative and shop management needs including personnel proposal, requisitioning, interviewing and hiring activities.
- Works collaboratively and takes the lead in assuring welding equipment and welding cells can be operated in a safe manner free of injury.
- Reviews engineering drawings to assure they provide for economic fabrication of highest quality.
- Works within and outside department to pre-plan future needs to assure the timeliness of equipment, weld development, weld and welder qualifications, training, execution, testing and any other aspect of the job associated with the weld overall process.
- Assures technical welding engineering support for shop welding surveillance for all welding processes.
- Works collaboratively with other departments, as required, to identify funding needs, constraints, equipment/parameter problems for assuring the timely completion of the weld process relative to the overall schedule needs.
- Works collaboratively with Operations to define the weld process capability, weld process robustness and weld process limitations to establish expectations associated with the efficient deposition of the weld, while achieving first time quality.
- Works to decrease (or "improve") weld and associated non-weld repair rates through an active and collaborative management style.
- Works within W.E. unit and department to specify welding processes and procedures to be employed through preparation of weld data sheets in accordance with contract requirements.
- Initiates welding procedure qualifications to support contract requirements.
- Evaluates welding performance through analysis of the Weld Defect Report. Initiates necessary corrective actions after considering economic, scheduler and quality impact.
- Responds to shop welding and welding metallurgical problems to effectively resolve the problem and yet maintain work within contractual obligations and corporate commitments.
- Identifies areas for improving overall weld operation efficiency through a collaborative understanding of the equipment, set-up, personnel, training and weld process capabilities vs the weld process robustness to assure first time quality.
- Provides technical justification for DSRs (Degradation of Specification Reports) and RARs (Repair Approval Requests) on all contracts.
- Identifies the risks associated within the contract and within shop operations associated with welding and works collaboratively to resolve concerns.
- Coordinates and supports proposal activities to assure all aspects of Safety, Quality, Schedule and Cost can be achieved and a gap analysis with guidance where risks exist.
- Organizes and supports the preparation of technical weld related comments to documents referenced in proposals.
- Participates in negotiations, as required, with customer to facilitate fair and equitable solutions assuring schedule, technical and price commitments are achievable and have the appropriate risks identified and accounted for.
- Establishes, analyzes, and negotiates programs or technical changes that result from customer inquiries or internal recommendations.
- Works within department and with associated departments to establish weld wire needs, quantities and special qualification requirements for individual proposals and overall NOG Contracts.
- Negotiates welding related technical requirements at proposal state and throughout contract term.
- Resolves customer concerns with respect to procedure qualifications and weld data sheets.
- Initiates actions for fabrication and testing of welding procedure qualifications.
- Interprets the requirements of NAVSEA [redacted]-1, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and customer specifications related to welding to assure that all fabrication meets contract requirements.
- Participates in Planning and evaluating welding research and development related to future program initiatives and manages customer workscopes that apply to future welding technology.
Job Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science Degree preferred in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or other engineering field and proven leadership and management of others.
- 3 years minimum of experience in the pressure vessel field or equivalent training in the heavy equipment or construction field
- Must be able to obtain government security clearance.
Pay: $93,000 - $120,000
The base salary range for this position in Ohio (US-OH) at the start of employment is expected to be between $93,000 and $120,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
