Full Job Description
Position Overview:

As our HPDU Safety Manager, you will report to the Sr. Manager of Safety and will be responsible for overseeing and implementing radiological and industrial safety programs and policies to ensure a safe work environment at the NOG-J site for HPDU pre-production and production activities. This role involves assessing workplace hazards, conducting safety training, and monitoring compliance with federal, state, and company regulations. The role will integrate within an existing safety program to work closely with facility staff, management, and external agencies to promote a culture of safety and health.

Your Day to Day as a HPDU Safety Manager at BWXT NOGJ:

Safety Program Development:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs and policies in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices


  • Regularly review and update safety protocols to ensure relevance and compliance


Risk Assessment and Compliance:

  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies
  • Analyze incident reports and develop strategies to prevent reoccurrence


Training and Education:

  • Design and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors to promote awareness of safety practices and protocols


  • Maintain documentation of training programs and employee participation


Incident Investigation:

  • Lead investigations of workplace safety incidents and near misses, documenting findings and developing corrective action plans


  • Communicate findings to management and relevant stakeholders, ensuring that follow-up actions are implemented


Emergency Preparedness:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of emergency response plans, ensuring that all facility personnel are familiar with protocols


  • Conduct regular drills and training sessions to prepare staff for emergency situations


Data Management and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, and training activities


  • Prepare and present safety reports and metrics to management, identifying trends and recommending improvements


Compliance with Regulations:

  • Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and industry standards, ensuring that the facility remains compliant


  • Liaise with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits


Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with other departments to integrate safety practices into daily operations


  • Foster a culture of safety by promoting open communication about safety concerns and encouraging employee engagement in safety initiatives


Required Qualifications:
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related science or engineering field; a master's degree is a plus


  • Requires 5+ years of experience in safety management, preferably in a chemical processing facility


  • Requires extensive knowledge of safety regulations, policies, and best practices (e.g., OSHA, EPA)


  • Requires experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Programs (RMP) (related to OSHA and EPA requirements)


  • Requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risks and implement effective solutions


  • Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence employees at all levels


  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST) are preferred


  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and effectively interface with all levels of personnel internal and external to the Company


  • Requires proficiency in safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite


  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.
  • Requires US Citizenship with no dual citizenship

Pay: $$98,000.00 - $$154,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $$98,000.00 and $$154,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
