THE ROLE IN A NUTSHELL

Base Salary: CAD $72,521.00 - 109,341.00

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical individualto join our Underwriting Department as a Strategic Underwriting Analyst. Thisrole is pivotal in ensuring that our underwriting processes and decision-makingare aligned with the Annual Operating Plan (AOP). The successful candidate willcontribute to the strategic goals of the department by providing insights andrecommendations based on thorough data analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Underwriting to develop new strategic plans for underwriting new business as well as for retaining existing business. Find creative solutions to help balance overall profitability with growth.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze underwriting data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement. Generate regular reports to track performance against the AOP.
  • Alignment with AOP: Ensure all underwriting activities are in line with the AOP. Monitor and report to senior leadership on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to underwriting objectives.
  • Process Improvement: Identify areas for process optimization within the underwriting workflow. Propose and implement solutions to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Develop CI plans to reduce administrative effort and track against objectives throughout the year.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other departments such as Finance, Risk Management, and Operations to ensure cohesive alignment with the AOP. Facilitate cross-functional communication and initiatives.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough risk assessments and evaluations to support underwriting decisions. Provide actionable insights to mitigate potential risks.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate documentation of underwriting processes and decisions. Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate findings and recommendations to senior management and key stakeholders. Prepare presentations and reports to support decision-making.
  • Evaluate monthly renewals and propose ideas for large or at-risk clients.
  • Special projects: look at profitability of block arrangements or other ad-hoc client requests to help support the team.
  • Support GS4SB renewals - work with director and manager to develop a process for block renewals under 50 lives.
  • Offer Peer review on large quotes and renewals; step in for managers if they are out on vacation to help support the team in their absence.
  • Offer ongoing training and mentoring to existing employees based on analysis and concerns/issues found during peer reviews.


WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Economics, or a related field. ASA or in progress towards ASA preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in underwriting, financial analysis, or a similar role. Experience in aligning business operations with strategic plans is highly desirable.
