Full Job Description
The Underwriter demonstrates a global perspective, uses extensive knowledge and experience to underwrite medical professional liability insurance, focused primarily on groups and facilities, to develop a book of business that will achieve production and profitability goals.

Supports underwriting function through leadership, collaboration and innovation. Leadership is demonstrated through encouraging the development of colleagues, championing the goals and initiatives of the organization and exhibiting a high maturity in their internal and external interactions. Effectively facilitates cross functional collaboration by involving all stakeholders in the decision making process. Exhibits openness to constructive feedback and encourages teamwork. Makes recommendations to Underwriting management to promote operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Analyzes pertinent information and exposures necessary to make decisions on account acceptance or declination and determine proper classification.
  • Approves applications, renewals, and endorsements within authority level. Determines appropriate rating plan and accurately calculates premiums for presented risks.
  • Effectively communicates and accurately documents underwriting decisions.
  • Manages assigned territory within company guidelines and compliance while meeting company financial objectives.
  • Develops and fosters relationships with agent broker partners through effective and efficient communication.
  • Coordinates and leads training sessions as needed on the underwriting processes.
  • Maintains knowledge of competitive landscape with regards to pricing and product offerings of competitors within assigned territory.
  • Actively participate in presentation to current and prospective insureds.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Researches healthcare and insurance trends.


Education, Requirements & Competencies
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. CPCU and/or RPLU studies are preferred. Active Property and Casualty Producers license
  • 4+ years of Medical Professional Liability underwriting required.
  • Candidates with strong producer relationships are preferred.
  • Ability to develop familiarity with a wide variety of healthcare facilities, the services they provide, as well as the regulatory, legislative, legal and economic factors that affect them.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, underwriting guidelines and manuals, bylaws, financials, articles of organization, loss runs, Joint Commission reports and other industry reports.
  • Ability to write effective reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn the use of new software applications as required.


Base salary range is $81,665 - $137,535. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors that are unique to each candidate including location, skill set, experience, qualifications and education.
