Traveling Superintendent (Automotive)

Position Summary

Barton Malow is hiring a Traveling Superintendent to lead field operations on automotive manufacturing projects across Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee. You will own the work in the field - safety, schedule, quality, manpower, and coordination - and you will be the person the owner, the trades, and your project team look to for how the job gets built.

Barton Malow has built for the automotive industry for a century. That relationship with the nation's automakers shows up in the precision, speed, and cleanroom expertise these projects demand, and it puts our teams on some of the largest manufacturing investments in the country. Automotive schedules do not move, and this role exists to protect them.

Because our automotive clients build across the region, this position travels. You will be considered for assignment at active project sites in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee, and you should be open to travel and to moving between sites as projects start and complete.

A note on the location you will see when you apply: Barton Malow is headquartered in Southfield, Michigan, so our job application system lists that as the posting location. This is not a Southfield-based role. It is a traveling position, and the assignment will be at one of our active automotive project sites in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, or Tennessee.

Key Job Responsibilities

Safety Leadership
  • Own site safety. Enforce Barton Malow corporate safety policies and site-specific requirements, and set the expectation that nobody works around them.
  • Lead daily pre-task planning, toolbox talks, and job hazard analysis with crews and subcontractors.
  • Identify and correct hazards proactively, and stop work when conditions require it.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses, and drive corrective action to closure.

Field Operations
  • Direct day-to-day construction activities, sequencing, and manpower across all trades on site.
  • Plan and manage site logistics, laydown areas, crane and equipment usage, temporary utilities, and access.
  • Hold subcontractors accountable to schedule, scope, quality, and safety commitments.
  • Coordinate equipment deliveries and installation activities with the owner's operations and vendor teams.
  • Anticipate constraints and conflicts in the field and resolve them before they affect the critical path.

Schedule + Cost
  • Build, maintain, and drive the short-interval and look-ahead schedules, and support development of the overall project schedule.
  • Track productivity and progress against plan, and take action when the work falls behind.
  • Identify and communicate schedule impacts, change conditions, and cost exposure to the project manager early.
  • Apply Lean planning practices to reduce rework and remove constraints from the work ahead.

Quality + Documentation
  • Verify installed work against drawings, specifications, and tolerances, and lead QA/QC inspections.
  • Manage punch list development and closeout, including commissioning and turnover support.
  • Maintain daily reports, manpower counts, field documentation, and as-built records.
  • Review and confirm that RFIs, submittals, and approved changes are reflected in the field.

Team + Client
  • Lead, coach, and develop project engineers, assistant superintendents, and field staff.
  • Run owner, trade partner, and coordination meetings on site with clear direction and follow-through.
  • Represent Barton Malow professionally with the owner, inspectors, and the surrounding community.

What You Bring
  • Eight or more years of construction field experience, including time leading crews as an assistant superintendent or superintendent.
  • Experience on industrial or manufacturing projects. Automotive experience is a strong plus.
  • Willingness to travel and to move between project sites in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA 1926 and a demonstrated safety leadership record.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and equipment installation documents.
  • Strong scheduling skills and comfort with construction software platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Direct, credible communication with trades, owners, and project teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent field experience.
  • OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, and other trade or safety certifications are preferred.
