Description
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the City Engineer, the Traffic Engineer performs professional traffic engineering work to support safe and efficient transportation systems throughout the City. The Traffic Engineer oversees traffic operations, conducts traffic studies, analyzes crash, volume, speed, and pedestrian activity data, responds to traffic-related concerns, and coordinates transportation-related projects with City departments and external agencies. Success requires strong engineering judgment, data analysis and problem-solving skills, knowledge of traffic safety standards, effective project coordination, and the ability to clearly communicate technical information to residents, City leadership, consultants, and agency partners.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in traffic engineering, transportation engineering, and/or municipal operations required.
Experience conducting or reviewing traffic studies, crash analyses, and operational evaluations.
Experience executing or reviewing traffic studies, crash analyses, speed studies, signing and pavement marking plans, and intersection/roadway operational evaluations.
Familiarity with transportation analysis and design tools such as Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, GIS, or similar software
Working knowledge of MMUTCD/MUTCD, traffic studies, signing/marking, signal systems, and roadway safety practices required
Desired Certification(s):
Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification strongly preferred
Michigan Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred; ability to obtain Michigan licensure if licensed in another state
