Full Job Description
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

As part of a small team, you will lead the design, development, and deployment of the data ingest pipelines and DevSecOps infrastructure that process large-scale telemetry from Blue Origin rocket engines. You will drive technical decisions affecting the collection, streaming, indexing, and analysis of engine development and test data, and you will determine the methods and approaches used to scale these systems as engine programs grow. This position requires demonstrated depth building high-throughput data pipelines, event-driven architectures, and search and observability platforms, along with the judgment to make sound engineering tradeoffs with limited direction. Together, our teams deliver the data platform that engineers rely on to monitor engine health, investigate anomalies, and accelerate test campaigns.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

As a Data DevSecOps Engineer III, you will own the design and delivery of data ingest and DevSecOps capabilities supporting engine telemetry, determining methods and approaches on new assignments with limited direction. You will solve complex problems spanning multiple systems, own schedule and technical milestones for your work, lead technical reviews, review the work of other engineers, and mentor junior team members. You will work across teams and with internal customers and external stakeholders to align the data platform with program needs. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Design, develop, and deploy secure, high-throughput data pipelines for large-scale engine telemetry streams, owning performance, scalability, and reliability outcomes.
  • Contribute to and help define the Engines DevSecOps and data ingest roadmap, translating program needs into technical approaches and phased implementation plans.
  • Design and implement streaming and event-driven architectures using event streaming technologies (Kafka, Kinesis, Apache Pulsar) to support real-time and near-real-time telemetry ingest and distribution across multiple consumers.
  • Own the design, deployment, and tuning of search, indexing, and observability capabilities using the Time series databases like Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) for high-volume time-series and log data, including index lifecycle, sharding, and retention strategies.
  • Establish and improve DevSecOps practices across the data platform, including CI/CD pipeline design, infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, secrets management, and continuous monitoring.
  • Design data models and storage strategies supporting multi-resolution time-series data (raw, down sampled, and aggregated) and implement the dashboards and data views (e.g., Grafana, Kibana) built on them.
  • Develop AI/ML and LLM-based approaches for anomaly detection, health monitoring, and automated engine data checks, and drive them from prototype to production.
  • Lead root cause analysis on complex production pipeline failures and data quality non-conformances and drive corrective and preventive actions to closure.
  • Define and execute performance, capacity, and cost optimization efforts across the data platform.
  • Author and approve technical artifacts including interface specifications, design documentation, test procedures, runbooks, and configuration standards.
  • Identify, quantify, and communicate technical, cost, and schedule risks to leadership, and propose mitigation approaches.
  • Drive tool development and process improvements that reduce error rates and improve platform efficiency across the team.
  • Define and implement security and compliance controls in accordance with Blue Origin standards and export control (ITAR/EAR) requirements.
  • Lead technical reviews and provide peer review and technical guidance to Level I and Level II engineers, mentoring on tooling, standards, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engine test, design, analysis, and IT/security to deliver telemetry data solutions, and represent the data platform in cross-program forums.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree or higher in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, data science, information systems, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing and testing software or data systems.
  • Demonstrated experience as a DevOps/DevSecOps engineer, data engineer, or in a similar software engineering role, including ownership of production systems.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and scaling data pipelines for high-volume streaming and batch data.
  • Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, including pipeline creation, editing, and deployment automation.
  • Demonstrated experience with Kafka or an equivalent event-driven/streaming platform (e.g., Kinesis, Pulsar), including topic design, partitioning, and consumer group management.
  • Demonstrated experience with the Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) or similar search and indexing technologies at scale.
  • Experience with Linux internals including commands and shell scripting.
  • Experience with Docker / containers and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi, CloudFormation).
  • Experience with TypeScript or Python and at least one additional language (e.g., Java, Scala, Go, C++).
  • Experience with Agile methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of databases and SQL including NoSQL, with experience in schema and data model design.
  • Experience building dashboards and data visualizations (e.g., Grafana, Kibana).
  • Experience with cloud services, preferably AWS (e.g., S3, MSK, OpenSearch, EC2, IAM, Lambda).
  • Working knowledge of data security best practices and secure software delivery.
  • Experience leading technical reviews and providing technical guidance or mentorship to other engineers.
  • Ability to determine appropriate methods and approaches on new problems with limited direction.
  • Ability to learn fast, multitask and drive tasks to completion using Agents and Hands On.
  • Ability to present technical concepts and recommendations to peers, customers, and leadership.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion.
  • Must have can do attitude and be problem solver.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with time-series data stores (e.g., InfluxDB, TimescaleDB) and down sampling or multi-resolution data strategies.
  • Experience with stream-processing frameworks (e.g., Kafka Streams, Flink, Spark Streaming).
  • Experience developing and productionizing machine learning models for anomaly detection or health monitoring on sensor/telemetry data.
  • Experience with LLMs and modern AI frameworks or services (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, SageMaker, Bedrock, LangChain).
  • Experience with secure DevSecOps tooling (SAST/DAST, SBOM, vulnerability scanning) and compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST 800-53/171).
  • Experience with observability tooling (Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Grafana Loki).
  • Experience with propulsion, engine test, manufacturing, or other high-reliability engineering data environments.
  • Experience establishing data governance, lineage, and data quality practices.
  • Experience influencing technical standards or best practices across multiple teams.
  • Ability to generate innovative reusable solutions.
  • Additional certifications in data engineering, DevSecOps, or cloud services.
