Position Overview

The Technical Manager leads the engineering and technical function for Louis Allis' medium-voltage motor business. Reporting to the President, Louis Allis, this role is the hands-on technical authority for application review, design release, AutoCAD drawing control, production support, technical quoting, customer issue resolution, and continuous improvement. The position works closely with Sales, Quoting, Project Management, Design Engineering, Production Engineering, Production, Quality, Purchasing, Field Service, and HR to build a responsive, scalable technical function.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Department Leadership
  • Lead day-to-day engineering and technical operations; set priorities, manage backlog, assign work, and coordinate Design Engineering, Production Engineering, Project Management, Quoting/Application Engineering, CAD/drafting, and documentation resources as assigned.
  • Establish practical review gates, decision rights, escalation paths, and release discipline; hire, coach, onboard, and develop technical talent as the department grows.
2. Engineering, AutoCAD & Documentation
  • Own application and design engineering for medium-voltage motor repair, rewind, rebuild, replacement, and engineered-to-order/custom applications; review customer specifications, motor data, operating conditions, drawings, test requirements, and technical risk assumptions.
  • Review and approve technical specifications, designs, AutoCAD drawings, revisions, documentation, engineering changes, and release packages; maintain standards, templates, libraries, naming conventions, and practical release checklists.
3. Production, Quality & Field Support
  • Provide hands-on shop support for tear-down findings, winding, machining, assembly, fit/function issues, test failures, nonconformances, and urgent technical dispositions.
  • Partner with Production, Quality, Purchasing, and Field Service to reduce rework, close corrective actions, resolve customer issues, and convert recurring problems into standards, work instructions, and training.
4. Quoting, Customer & Commercial Support
  • Support Sales and Quoting with technical scope, assumptions, exclusions, specifications, test requirements, labor/material drivers, risk flags, and margin-impacting technical decisions.
  • Serve as the senior technical interface for complex applications, customer clarifications, scope changes, test results, disputes, site visits, escalations, and vendor/customer technical discussions.
5. Continuous Improvement, Safety & Controls
  • Improve engineering release quality, quote technical turnaround, documentation accuracy, customer response, and recurring failure modes through practical standard work and post-job reviews.
  • Ensure technical decisions and documentation support safe production, testing, shipment, field work, customer operation, and protection of proprietary, customer, defense-related, or controlled technical information.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in electric motors, motor repair, motor manufacturing, engineered-to-order industrial equipment, or similar technical environments; meaningful medium-voltage motor experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred; exceptional directly relevant motor leadership experience may be considered.
  • Hands-on experience with motor repair, rewind, design, testing, troubleshooting, production support, or manufacturing execution.
  • Strong AutoCAD and technical documentation capability, including drawing standards, revision discipline, release quality, and engineering change control.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications, motor data, drawings, test results, shop findings, technical risks, and commercial commitments.
  • Experience supporting technical quoting, scope definition, customer clarifications, risk reviews, and engineered-to-order bid support.
  • Proven technical leadership, prioritization, cross-functional communication, customer-facing communication, and shop-floor credibility.
  • Preferred: leadership of engineers, drafters, estimators, project managers, or technical resources; industrial, utility, municipal, marine, naval, defense, or heavy industrial motor application experience; familiarity with quality systems, CAPA, field failure analysis, ERP/MRP, document control, CAD/PLM/PDM, or engineering change tools.
Work Environment & Expectations
  • Primarily on-site in Warrior, Alabama, with regular shop-floor presence, required PPE, and expected safety discipline.
  • Occasional customer, supplier, field service, or business travel may be required; must manage urgent interruptions while maintaining engineering discipline and documentation quality.
