Full Job Description
Herren Associates is seeking a Systems Modeler to develop, build, and maintain model-based systems engineering (MBSE) products supporting Department of Defense customers. The Systems Modeler will build structural and behavioral models - with particular emphasis on parametric modeling and the representation of dynamic system behavior - that support engineering analysis, trade studies, and program decision-making.

The ideal candidate combines strong SysML modeling skills with hands-on experience representing dynamic system behavior, including parametric relationships, constraints, and time- or state-driven behavior. Prior military service or professional experience supporting DoD programs is a plus. Department of the Navy experience is preferred.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain SysML models representing system structure, behavior, and interfaces using Cameo Systems Modeler or comparable MBSE tools.
  • Build parametric models and constraint blocks to capture engineering relationships, performance parameters, and design trade-offs.
  • Model dynamic system behavior using state machines, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, and simulation-driven approaches.
  • Represent time-dependent and state-driven behavior of complex systems, including control loops, mode transitions, and system responses to inputs and disturbances.
  • Support trade studies and engineering analyses by executing parametric and behavioral models and interpreting results.
  • Integrate SysML models with simulation and analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Modelica) to validate dynamic system behavior.
  • Maintain traceability between requirements, functions, interfaces, and model elements.
  • Support development of architecture products, including mission threads, use cases, activity diagrams, and requirements architectures.
  • Apply modeling conventions, naming standards, and configuration management practices established by the lead architect or model owner.
  • Participate in technical reviews, architecture working groups, and stakeholder meetings to present and validate models.
  • Document modeling assumptions, methods, and results to support technical reports and briefings.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Three or more years of experience in systems engineering, MBSE, or systems modeling.
  • Hands-on experience building parametric models (parametric diagrams, constraint blocks) in SysML.
  • Experience modeling dynamic system behavior using state machines, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, or simulation-based methods.
  • Experience with Cameo Systems Modeler or a comparable MBSE platform.
  • Working knowledge of systems engineering lifecycle activities, including requirements, architecture, and verification.
  • Ability to translate engineering requirements and physical system relationships into structured, executable models.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with close attention to model accuracy and detail.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Modelica, or similar tools for dynamic or physics-based system simulation.
  • Experience integrating parametric SysML models with engineering analysis tools to support trade studies.
  • Familiarity with UAF, DoDAF, or related architecture frameworks.
  • Experience with Navy or DoD platforms, mission systems, or acquisition programs.
  • Prior military service or professional experience supporting DoD programs.
  • Relevant certifications such as OCSMP, INCOSE ASEP/CSEP, or Cameo certification.
  • Master's degree in systems engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Desired Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a detail-oriented modeler who can translate complex system requirements and physical relationships into precise, executable SysML models. The role requires strong parametric modeling skills and the ability to accurately represent dynamic system behavior, producing traceable models that support engineering analyses and decisions made by program and technical leadership.
