Are you a strategic leader who thrives at the intersection of engineering excellence, cutting-edge software solutions, and national defense?
The 581st Software Engineering Squadron (581 SWES) is seeking an exceptional senior leader to serve as Flight Chief over Production Flight D (MXDPD). In this pivotal role, you will exercise second-level (and higher) supervisory and managerial authority, spearheading the delivery of vital Automatic Test Station (ATS) and Test Program Set (TPS) software capabilities.
Your teams don't just write code and run test benches-they directly sustain the avionics and missile systems that keep U.S. Air Force aircraft combat-ready and victorious in contested environments. If you are ready to guide high-performing technical teams, influence senior executive leadership, and safeguard American air superiority, this is where your leadership matters most.
What You Will Accomplish:
- As the leader of Production Flight D, you will shape operational strategy, champion innovation, and maintain the readiness of critical national defense assets. In this role, you will:
- Lead & Mentor High-Performing Teams: Exercise direct and second-level supervisory authority over subordinate supervisors, team leads, engineers, and technical professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, technical mastery, and continuous growth.
- Deliver Mission-Critical Software Solutions: Direct the development, testing, and deployment of cutting-edge Automatic Test Station (ATS) and Test Program Set (TPS) software packages that drive the diagnostic testing and depot-level repair of advanced avionics and missile systems.
- Advise Senior Leadership: Serve as the authoritative subject-matter expert and trusted advisor to higher headquarters, executive leadership, and program offices on avionics sustainment health, resource allocations, and strategic modernization roadmaps.
- Ensure Uninterrupted Avionics Readiness: Establish and execute strategic flight plans, milestones, and production goals that prevent fleet grounding and bolster uninterrupted war-winning capabilities for the Air Force.
- Drive Operational & Engineering Excellence: Optimize engineering workflows, champion modern software assurance and agile practices, and ensure rigorous compliance with Department of Defense quality and cybersecurity standards.
You Are a Great Fit If You Are:
- An Inspiring Leader of Leaders: Proven experience directing complex technical work through subordinate supervisors and leads, with a track record of building inclusive, motivated, and mission-focused teams.
- Technically Astute & Mission-Driven: Passionate about defense avionics, embedded software, automated testing environments, or mission system sustainment.
- A Confident Strategic Communicator: Adept at translating complex engineering challenges into clear executive briefings, policy recommendations, and actionable organizational plans.
- A Resilient Problem-Solver: Skilled at balancing operational demands, shifting mission priorities, and resource constraints to consistently deliver dependable, high-quality results.
- Dedicated to Public Service & National Defense: Motivated by the knowledge that your team's day-to-day work directly protects warfighters and national security worldwide.
Why Join the 581st Software Engineering Squadron?
Working with the Air Force Civilian Service offers the rare opportunity to tackle complex, state-of-the-art technological challenges with the unmatched stability and comprehensive benefits of federal service:
- Comprehensive Federal Benefits: Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB), Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAFEDS), and Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance (FEGLI).
- Retirement & Wealth Building: Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) defined-benefit pension plus the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) with up to 5% government matching.
- Work-Life Balance: Generous annual and sick leave accrual, 11 paid federal holidays, and workplace flexibilities in accordance with mission requirements.
Impact That Transcends the Bottom Line: Your efforts have an immediate, tangible impact on national security and global defense readiness.
