SUPERVISING COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN
(Technical Services Unit)

RECRUITMENT/POSITION INFORMATION

This recruitment is being conducted to establish an Open Eligible List to fill current and future vacancies in this class until the next recruitment. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower-level classifications throughout the County of Orange.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Technical Systems Unit (TSU) is a highly technical and specialized unit. The unit is responsible for the design, maintenance, and installation of 800 MHz CCCS radio dispatch consoles, base station radios, in-building Bi-Directional Amplifiers, OA1 radios, HCA MED9 dispatch center and ambulance radio certification, and the 900 MHz paging systems. Furthermore, the unit deploys and maintains in-field maintenance, and any additional requests for services, maintenance, installations or repair of mobile and portable radio units, and equipment throughout the County.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATEThe Supervising Communications Technician assigned to the Technical Systems Unit (TSU), field team specialty, will be responsible for evaluating, assigning, authorizing, and confirming the technical services provided by the field and dispatch technicians. They will serve in a supervisor capacity with a minimum of eight direct reports ranging from Utility Drivers to Senior Communications Technicians. The Supervising Communications Technician will oversee all services involving dispatch systems calls, (PVS) Patrol Video Systems installations and in-field maintenance, and any additional requests for services, maintenance, or repair of mobile and portable radio units and dispatch consoles and equipment throughout the County as requested by our partner agencies. The Supervising Communications Technical will also be responsible for employee coaching and development, annual evaluations, and ongoing cross-training while keeping up to date with growing technologies.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge and technical skill to perform all field technician responsibilities, leadership skills, professionalism, and understanding the laws and policies. Must be able to make sound judgment, and use technical and logical discretion, and demonstrate the interpersonal skills needed to mentor their team. Focusing on the goals of developing and maintaining technologies, which support public and office safety.

License Required:

Possession of a valid General Radio Telephone Operator's License issued by the Federal Communications Commission.

Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher is required by date of appointment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSApplicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner. Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, polygraph test and fingerprinting. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcripts. Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credentials Services N.A.C.E.S.).

Environmental Conditions
The incumbent will be required to work in various environments as a field service technician varying from the Division shop, County hospitals and dispatch centers. Must be able to drive in all weather conditions and in potentially difficult terrain dependent upon the facility they are assigned to service. Travel will be done within a County assigned vehicle. Shifts may be various and up to a 24/7 basis when covering an on-call shift.

ELIGIBLE LIST

After all procedures have been completed, Sheriff Human Resources will establish an eligible list of qualified candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
