Full Job Description
SSA Marine is seeking a Superintendent to join our SSA Marine team. This full-time, permanent position is based at our office in North Vancouver and reports to the General Manager, Lynnterm.

The Position

The Superintendent of Dock Operations oversees terminal space utilization and dock operations, ensuring safety, security, quality, and efficiency while supervising the operations management team and unionized workforce. The role coordinates vessel handling, workforce and equipment readiness, and cargo operations, while troubleshooting issues and ensuring accurate processes and documentation for the movement of steel and general cargo between vessels, trucks, and railcars.

You will be part of a motivated and diverse team and will have a high degree of interaction with all employees throughout the organization.

Responsibilities & Activities
  • Lead and enforce workplace safety programs, policies, and procedures, including incident investigations, PPE, drug and alcohol compliance, harassment prevention, and spill reporting.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through inspections, hazard identification, Safety Blitz initiatives, training, seminars, and participation in JHSC meetings.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate cargo handling and operational procedures, manuals, certifications, and safety documentation.
  • Supervise and support unionized employees, ensuring compliance with operating procedures, productivity standards, and collective agreement requirements.
  • Monitor foreperson workloads, track job orders, and collaborate with other superintendents to optimize workforce allocation and operational efficiency.
  • Schedule vessel and dock operations, ensuring adequate staffing, equipment, and resources are available to meet operational demands.
  • Liaise with shipping customers, supercargoes, agents, carriers, and internal stakeholders to coordinate vessel operations and cargo flow.
  • Prepare and monitor vessel loading operations using stow plans and terminal documentation while ensuring safe and efficient cargo handling.
  • Oversee vessel, warehouse, railcar, and dock activities, adjusting workforce deployment as operational needs change.
  • Support terminal operations through administrative and coordination duties, including labour dispatch, invoicing, railcar unloading coordination, equipment control, facility maintenance planning, and positive abour relations.

Qualifications & Skills

The successful candidate will manage daily terminal operations by maintaining effective communication with staff, coordinating with stakeholders and customers, and responding to changing operational requirements to ensure safe, efficient, and productive operations. They will also participate in site committees, represent the company in labour relations matters, and provide management with updates and recommendations regarding operational performance, incidents, and workforce issues. The qualifications and skills to be successful in this position include:
  • Waterfront, marine terminal, or heavy industry experience supported by relevant post-secondary education.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience supervising a unionized workforce.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and best practices.
  • Comprehensive understanding of vessel, rail, terminal, cargo stowage, and stability operations.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong technicalexpertisein rigging, lifting operations, and computerized operating systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to supervise, mentor, coach, and motivate teams while fostering positive labour relations.
  • Strong organizational, time management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, including flexible shifts and the physical demands of climbing equipment andlifting upto 50 lbs.
