Full Job Description
As a Superintendent for PCL Industrial Constructors Inc. in Nisku, Alberta (Industrial), you'll have the opportunity to lead all field operations to construct the project. You will also oversee on-site construction activities and ensures project plans and schedule are followed and that the project is executed effectively, safely, and within budget

Responsibilities
• Develops, implements, and maintains the PCL safety program in the fabrication facility, and builds shop safety culture through mentorship and modelling. Focus areas include hot work, overhead cranes and rigging, material handling, grinding, radiation safety during RT, and PWHT.
• Works closely with the fabrication/operations manager and shop team. Identifies and resolves throughput constraints, work conflicts, and schedule risks early, and develops and carries out recovery plans when the shop falls behind.
• Communicates with own forces (pipefitters, welders, helpers, material handlers) and makes sure productivity, quality, and safety requirements are met. Oversees subcontracted services such as NDE, PWHT, coatings, and blasting.
• Liaises with clients, EPC/engineering representatives, client inspectors, third-party inspectors, field construction teams, and office representatives.
• Supervises, directs, coaches, trains, and mentors shop foremen, general foremen, and leads across shifts or bays.
• Takes part in selecting, onboarding, and placing shop staff, including welder qualification testing.
• Owns shop flow from material receipt through cutting, fit-up, welding, NDE, PWHT, hydrotest, coatings, and shipping. Identifies the critical path and bottlenecks, and builds solutions into shop loading plans and schedules.
• Leads fabrication of process, utility, and pipeline-related piping spools across carbon steel, low-temperature carbon steel, chrome-moly, stainless, and duplex/alloy materials, in shop and field-weld configurations.
• Works with the project and estimating teams to develop and carry out the fabrication execution plan, including shop loading against backlog, spool sequencing aligned to field construction work packages, and delivery commitments.
• Ensures compliance with the shop Quality Control Manual, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS/PQR), welder qualifications, and applicable codes, such as ASME B31.3, ASME Section IX, CSA B51, and CSA Z662 where applicable.
• Maintains material traceability, including heat numbers, Mill Test Reports (MTRs), and positive material identification (PMI), and produces complete, client-ready spool turnover packages.
• Ensures timely scheduling, coordination, and cost control for shop labour, equipment, consumables, and materials.
• Influences equipment selection and shop methodology, including automated and mechanized welding, positioners and rotators, cutting and bevelling equipment, bay layout, and material handling.
• Drives weld quality performance by tracking weld repair rates, analyzing root causes, and coaching welders to reduce rework.
• Reviews contracts, purchase orders, and client specifications to identify and mitigate risks such as scope gaps, specification conflicts, and unpriced NDE or testing requirements. Pursues opportunities so that budgets, forecasts, and profitability targets are met.
• Coordinates shipping logistics with field teams and carriers, including spool marking, preservation, load planning, dunnage, and tie-downs, so that delivery matches field installation sequence.
• Stays current with fabrication technology and pursues improvements in productivity, automation, and digital tracking.

Qualifications
• Journeyperson Steamfitter-Pipefitter or Welder certificate (Red Seal preferred), or a postsecondary diploma or engineering degree in a related discipline.
• NCSO designation (IND) and Gold Seal certification required (CDN). A certificate in negotiation or equivalent experience.
• 15 years of progressive supervisory experience preferred, including significant time in a pipe spool fabrication shop.
• Demonstrated experience as a superintendent or general foreman running a production spool fabrication facility.
• In-depth knowledge of piping codes, welding processes (GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, SAW), WPS/PQR requirements, and welder qualification.
• Working knowledge of NDE methods (RT, UT/PAUT, MT, PT), PWHT, hydrotesting, and PMI, and of how each affects shop flow and cost.
• Experience with pressure piping quality programs and regulatory oversight, such as ABSA or the applicable provincial authority.
• Ability to read and interpret piping isometrics, P&IDs, and client specifications, and to resolve engineering issues with the client and engineer.
• Experience scheduling shop loading, tracking productivity using shop metrics such as diameter-inches and weld repair rate, and mentoring others on resource forecasting.
• Ability to lead and manage others, including multiple shifts or bays.
• Thorough understanding of contract and specification language, with the ability to identify and mitigate risks and to identify and use opportunities.
• Understanding of collective agreements and jurisdiction for fabrication shop work (union and CLAC environments) (IND).
• In-depth knowledge and application of safety and environmental principles, procedures, and legislation, and demonstrated experience building a strong safety culture.
• Ability to run effective production and quality meetings with clients, inspectors, trades, own forces work (OFW), and internal staff, and to present at client meetings or for pursuit work.
• Experience resolving grievance and employee relations issues.
• Demonstrated conflict-resolution skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional judgment.
• Expert understanding of OFW productivity rates and Labour Cost Reports (LCRs), with the ability to interpret cost reports.
• CSA W178.2 welding inspector, CWB, or AWS CWI certification is an asset.
