Description

Job Title: Submarine Hull Surveyor
Location: Halifax, NS
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Annual Salary: $75,000-120,000

Key Responsibilities

The Submarine Hull Surveyor is responsible for professionally and efficiently undertaking surveys as part of a team, compiling survey findings, producing survey reports, developing repair specifications, and undertaking acceptance activities in a marine environment. Responsibilities and tasks include:

General:
  • Provide Naval Architecture advice and support to external and internal customers.
  • Independently undertake technical work which requires coordination with colleagues and making a substantial contribution to assigned projects.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
  • Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice.
  • Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
  • Maintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization.
  • Demonstrate willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff and support with mentorship to junior staff in developing technical competency.
  • Contribute to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.

Role Specific:
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting structural surveys on submarines or surface ships, including:
    • Experience conducting visual inspections on tanks, compartment structure, pressure hull structure or hull penetrations.
    • Competence in using surveyor tools such as pit gauges, feeler gauges, and bridge cam gauges.
    • Identifying and mapping structural defects in a coordinate system for reporting purposes.
  • Experienced in developing of survey packages from technical documentation.
  • Ability to compile inspection findings and produce survey reports using customer supplied reporting templates.
  • Support the development of repair specifications including:
    • Request and assess the results from Non-Destructive Testing (NDE).
    • Assess structures against relevant codes and standards to determine whether repairs are required.
    • Develop technical specifications to resolve complex repairs.
    • Provide input to risk assessments.
  • Support quality assurance activities including:
    • Conduct work acceptance and inspections to verify completion of key steps in repair sequences.
    • Witness platform tests or trials as client representative.


Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential:
  • Technologist Diploma in Naval Architecture or related field, or a university degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in surveying marine structures.
  • Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.

Desirable:
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Experience working in a shipyard environment and performing work which requires entry into confined spaces.
  • Strong communication and technical reporting writing experience.
  • Ability to work independently and to learn without formal instruction.
  • CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector or equivalent.
  • NACE Coating Inspector or equivalent.
