What you'll do

Join DES as a Structural Engineering Team Lead and help lead the growth of our Structural Engineering practice. This role combines technical leadership, project oversight, QA/QC, team development, and business development. You'll provide guidance on structural projects and support structural work across DES's multidisciplinary projects while mentoring and developing the team. You'll also play an important role in expanding the Structural Engineering business by developing client relationships, identifying new opportunities, and building our project pipeline. Through strategic pursuits, proposals, and client partnerships, you'll help expand the practice and strengthen DES's position in the market.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and technical direction to Structural Engineers, EIT's and Structural Technical Designers
  • Coordinate workload assignments within the structural team to meet project schedules and staffing needs
  • Mentor and develop team members through coaching, technical training, project oversight, and career development discussions
  • Responsible for meeting structural engineering design schedules and budgets
  • Provide technical leadership by formulating and effectively communicating structural design solutions to clients and the project team
  • Lead the creation of precise and comprehensive construction documents, guaranteeing accuracy through to completeness
  • Team with Project Managers on timelines, budget and additional services
  • Assist with the preparation of proposals, statements of qualifications, project approaches, scopes of work, and fee estimates for Structural Engineering opportunities
  • Develop compelling fee proposals and represent the firm in client marketing interviews and presentations
  • Actively participate in professional development and mentoring by creating and growing industry connections through involvement in professional and marketing organizations
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities for Structural Engineering services, leveraging existing client relationships and developing new industry and professional contacts
  • Foster, develop, grow and maintain relationships with our valued clients
  • Contribute to the performance review process by providing constructive feedback
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team culture through regular communication and knowledge sharing
  • Evaluate the impact of project objectives on the structural design and implement appropriate solutions


Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California Structural Engineer license, coupled with at least 10 years of increasing responsibility within the structural engineering field
  • Bachelor's or master's degree with concentration in Structural Engineering
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers, clients, contractors, and other project stakeholders
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, building codes, design standards, and applicable industry practices
  • Solid foundation in structural engineering fundamentals and their implementation in professional practice
  • Keen interest in the technical challenges and advancements of seismic engineering design
  • Passion for contributing to a variety of project types, including both building retrofits and new constructions
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to Structural Engineers, EITs, and other technical staff
  • Comprehensive understanding of all design and construction phases
  • HCAI and DSA experience a plus
  • Proficient in both manual and computerized analysis methodologies
  • Ability to represent the firm professionally in client meetings, industry events, networking opportunities, and professional organizations
  • Established professional network within the structural engineering and broader design and construction industry, with active involvement in relevant industry organizations, events, and professional associations
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to effectively balance technical, project, leadership, and business development responsibilities
  • Work onsite in our Redwood City or San Francisco office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without any restrictions or requirement of sponsorship now or in the future

The typical pay range for this position is $140,000 - $180,000 in total compensation. Compensation depends on the individual's skills, experience, education, and geographic location.
