What We're Looking ForThis opportunity entails:
Perform structural and tunnel inspections in accordance with applicable codes, agency standards, and safety requirements.
Prepare detailed inspection reports, including condition ratings, photographs, sketches, and repair recommendations.
Complete assigned inspection and engineering tasks within established schedules and budgeted hours.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including geotechnical, civil, and construction personnel.
Manage a team of 1-3 engineers including field inspectors.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
As needed, willingness with work some nights to oversee rehab work by contractor
Develop discipline-specific deliverables, including repair concepts, design calculations, and contract documents.
Support field activities, including access planning, track allocation, and safety compliance.
What You'll Do:- Responsible for development of the project scope and fee quotation and assists in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
- Coordinates project activities establishes priorities and staff to jobs. Prepares Summary Inspection Report of Daily activities. Monitors contractor progress and compares with the reviewed progress schedule. Resolves technical field issues, and coordinates with Architects and Engineers for timely and accurate responses to requests for information.
- Oversees project controls, including checking contractors controls and coordinating schedules, reviews constructors schedule.
- Reviews submittals for conformance to plans and specifications. Develops strategies with the contractor to create submittal packages that conform to schedule requirements.
- Implements the firm's project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project. Leads the development and the execution of the project management plan. Supervises and mentors team to overall project objectives. Identifies and resolves non-compliant work.
- Provides interpretation and enforcement of contract plans and specifications. Develops strategies with the contractor to create submittal packages that conform to schedule requirements.
- Confirms change order requests, develops estimates, negotiates costs, and writes change orders.
- Provides cost control on projects and quality control within discipline.
- Partners with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, building client relationships and pursuit efforts for mini-mega and mega projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Works with the project team and marketing resources to prepare appropriate proposal and presentation materials. Leads proposal development and interview presentations for strategic, mini-mega, and mega projects to the client as well as general presentations within the industry and community.
- May be responsible for the recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of construction staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or relevant degree and 10 years relevant experience, or
- In lieu of education, 14 years of relevant experience.
What You'll Bring:- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong understanding of structural behavior, deterioration mechanisms, and tunnel systems (reinforced concrete, tunnel liners, waterproofing, drainage, etc.).
- Ability to assess structural damage, identify root causes, and recommend practical remediation strategies.
- Proficiency in preparing clear inspection documentation and engineering reports.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MicroStation, AutoCAD, and inspection documentation tools.
- Ability to work independently in field environments and exercise sound engineering judgment.
- Effective time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple inspection assignments.
- Strong decision-making skills and resourcefulness in field and project settings.
- Experience managing and directing engineering teams.
What We Prefer:- 12 years relevant experience in structural engineering including structures and tunnels.
- Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of California
- Experience performing condition assessments and deficiency documentation.
- Experience evaluating inspection findings and making engineering recommendations for repair, rehabilitation, or further investigation.
- Experience coordinating with client representatives, contractors, maintenance crews and other stakeholders.
- Experience managing a State of Good Repair Program or other program management initiatives. Experience developing work plans for contractors and coordinating multi-contractor activities.

The approximate pay range for Los Angeles Metro Area and Orange County, CA is $173,075.17 - $276,470.74. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
