Full Job Description

We’re seeking someone to join our State and Local Tax team as a Vice President in New York Tax to work on compliance and reporting functions.  The role will report directly into the Head of Morgan Stanley’s State and Local Tax Group. 

In the Finance division, we act as a partner to business units around the globe by providing management, review, analysis and advisory services of the Firm’s financial and capital resources. This is a Vice President level position within the Tax & Advisory job family which ensures compliance with income and indirect tax filings, reports tax information for the Firm’s regulatory filings, manages the Firm’s global tax authority relationships, including tax controversy, and monitors relevant tax regulations and legislation. Additional responsibilities include managing the Firm’s domestic and international tax strategies, determining the Firm’s transfer pricing policies and advising Senior Management and BUs on business products, strategic transactions and restructuring objectives.

Primary Responsibility:

Seeking a State and Local Tax Vice President to work on state and local tax compliance and reporting functions for a complex financial services organization with a footprint in all major jurisdictions.

The leading candidate should possess the following qualities:

  • Strong technical background in state and local tax corporate income and franchise taxes

  • Knowledge of ASC 740 and the ability to work on aspects of the Firms effective tax rate and reserves from a state and local tax perspective

  • Ability to act as a subject matter expert with regards to state and local tax compliance and reporting matters

  • Liaison with all members of the Global Tax Department with respect to state and local tax compliance and reporting matters

  • Assist with identifying and incorporating federal, state and local tax law changes into current processes and procedures

  • Develop strong working relationships with internal and external functional partners

  • Ability to work with and manage outside service providers and offshore staff

Background/Skills Required:

  • Minimum of 10+ years of SALT related experience

  • A combination of financial service industry and client service experience a plus (Big 4)

  • Significant ASC 740 experience is a must

  • Strong written, oral, negotiating and presentation skills; demonstrated ability to represent a global organization

  • Strong analytic, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Strong managerial skills and ability to attract, develop and retain talent

  • Experience covering complex state tax issues in a real-time environment

  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborative corporate environment

  • Corptax experience preferred

  • Financial services industry experience preferred, but not required

  • CPA, MS, MBA, JD or LLM required

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $120,000 and $205,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission

earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
