About the Role:

As a Staff Product Mobile Engineer, you will play a key role in architecting and building user-facing mobile experiences that evolve Gusto's personal finance platform. Operating across native iOS and Android environments, you will leverage modern declarative frameworks (SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose), a shared GraphQL API layer, and AI-native workflows to deliver seamless end-to-end features. Your work will focus on improving financial tools for everyday employees, helping them reduce financial stress, build healthy money habits, and gain greater control over their paychecks. You will collaborate with a talented cross-functional team, contributing technical leadership throughout the product development lifecycle-from ideation and architecture to release and long-term scaling.

The Consumer Money team is on a mission to help employees achieve financial peace of mind by bridging employment and personal finances. The team's product suite gives workers complete control over their money-including on-demand pay, high-yield cash accounts, and automated savings-all anchored to the paycheck relationship Gusto uniquely powers.

Operating as one of the fastest-growing engines within Gusto Money, the team builds at a fast, startup-like pace. Beyond scaling core worker-facing products, the team is actively incubating 0-to-1 foundational technologies to power Gusto's broader financial platform vision. Handling people's livelihoods in a regulated banking space requires combining rapid innovation with deep technical rigor, system reliability, and an uncompromised focus on user experience. This role represents a high-impact opportunity to help shape the future of personal and platform finance at Gusto.

Here's what you'll do day-to-day:

• Architect, build, and deploy native mobile features end-to-end across iOS (SwiftUI) and Android (Jetpack Compose) using a shared GraphQL schema
• Help drive the product development process from concept to launch, ensuring high standards of technical rigor, system performance, and mobile security in a regulated banking domain
• Adopt and maximize the latest best practices for using AI technologies (e.g. Claude) to accelerate cross-platform feature translation, raise code quality, and optimize team velocity
• Collaborate on complex and ambiguous mobile architecture problems in close partnership with Engineering, Product Management, Design, and external banking partners
• Work cross-functionally to build and maintain mobile infrastructure, testing automation, and release pipelines to support dual-platform scaling
• Mentor team members, guide mobile architectural standards, and engage in opposite-platform code reviews to ensure idiomatic code quality across both stacks

Here's what we're looking for:

• 8+ years of professional mobile software development experience with deep expertise in at least one primary native stack (Swift/iOS or Kotlin/Android)
• Willingness and desire to flex across both mobile platforms (iOS and Android), building natively using SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose backed by shared API contracts and AI translation workflows
• Deep understanding of modern declarative UI paradigms (SwiftUI or Jetpack Compose), reactive state management, and unidirectional data flow
• A product-first mindset with a willingness and aptitude to flex across both iOS and Android using strong mobile fundamentals and AI translation workflows
• Maximizes the use of AI tooling while guiding the team in adopting modern AI practices
• Experience leading multi-quarter technical initiatives from scoping and architecture to launch and post-release monitoring
• Experience working with strongly typed API layers (GraphQL) and managing offline caching, state synchronization, and complex mobile data contracts
• Comfortable dealing with ambiguity, quick iteration cycles, and helping facilitate informed technical tradeoffs
• An aptitude and interest in bringing clarity and simplicity to complex and ambiguous problems

Bonus Points:

• Production experience shipping features across both Swift/SwiftUI and Kotlin/Jetpack Compose
• Experience in the Fintech or banking industry building high-reliability, zero-defect mobile applications
• Familiarity with mobile infrastructure, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing environments, and build & release systems
• Experience with MVVM or modern unidirectional architecture patterns

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $163,000-$204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000-$247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
