Role DescriptionThe Structures Engineering team at Form is responsible for designing the structure, enclosure, and sealing systems that supports and integrates all parts of our innovative utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. We strive to deliver designs that are optimized for performance, quality, reliability, and cost for high-volume manufacturing at Form Factory.
We're seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our team and champion the Structural FEA aspects of our design process. Utilizing FEA and hand calculations, you will set the standard for excellence in structural analysis, solving dynamic and static, linear and nonlinear problem sets for load cases such as Transport Shock & Vibration, Seismic, Wind, Snow, Lifting, and more. You will work cross-functionally with designers and test engineers, interrogating the potential design space and selecting appropriate test methods to validate designs. As a problem solver, you will balance structural optimization with design for manufacturability, weight reduction, and cost-down, collaborating deeply with designers to offer design solutions, not simply providing pass/fail results.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of scaling our multi-day energy storage system at Form and contributing to a sustainable future. If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, apply now! Relocation assistance is available.
What you'll do:- Perform structural analysis of Form Energy's Gen 2 product designs, utilizing Ansys FEA and hand calcs
- Establish best practices for analysis methodology and pass/fail criteria for load cases
- Create calculator tools (e.g., spreadsheets) for standard load cases and joint analyses, expediting first pass of design
- Work closely with test team to initiate test campaigns to establish material libraries for FEA
- Collaborate with designers and test engineers to validate designs through test and FEA correlation
- Present analysis and test results to broader team and leadership in design reviews
- Perform failure root cause analysis on systems and assemblies
- Travel up to 10% to other Form Energy offices or vendor sites
What you'll bring:- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 7+ years industry experience in mechanical design and structural analysis
- Experience leading design work for complex mechanical structures, using Ansys FEA for structural analysis (dynamic, static, linear, and non-linear simulations)
- Proficient in component design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), especially sheet metal, stampings, and weldments
- Capable in computer-aided design (CAD), specifically SolidWorks modeling
- Sense of urgency and self-driven to hit difficult schedule targets
- Experience analyzing structures per ASCE 7-22 and AISC-360 is preferred
