Job Summary:Enterprise Messaging & Collaboration Engineering owns the platforms PayPal relies on daily, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, and the identity and compliance systems supporting them. The team ensures messaging reliability and that platform controls meet Legal, Compliance, and regulatory requirements. As AI agents increasingly operate alongside employees, it also governs what non-human identities can access and do. This Staff-level role owns the administration and production operations of PayPal's Slack Enterprise Grid environment, supporting tens of thousands of employees across regulated businesses. Responsibilities include assessing apps, agents, integrations, and Slack Connect requests; managing defensible retention and export configurations; responding to service degradation; establishing architecture and platform standards; and building and operating the services and pipelines surrounding Slack-not simply configuring the platform.
Job Description:Essential Responsibilities: - Lead the configuration, maintenance, and optimization of the organization's network and security infrastructure to ensure high performance and reliability.
- Architect and integrate networks across multiple business units and diverse cloud environments, ensuring seamless connectivity and scalability.
- Champion the use of Infrastructure as Code processes to automate and maintain infrastructure consistency, scalability, and up-to-date configurations.
- Oversee the configuration, deployment, and management of F5 Local Traffic Managers (LTMs) and Advanced Security Modules (ASMs) to ensure seamless application delivery and security.
- Create and implement strategies for integrating cloud Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), interconnects, and direct connects, ensuring efficient and secure data flow between on-premises and cloud environments.
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance the network's scalability and resilience, ensuring it can handle growing business demands and traffic loads.
- Work closely with infrastructure, application, and security teams to ensure network designs meet cross-functional requirements and adhere to best practices.
Minimum Qualifications:- 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications:Responsibilities- Platform ownership: Run day-to-day administration and production operations of Slack Enterprise Grid. This covers org and workspace policy, SSO/SCIM identity integration, and Slack Connect governance.
- App and agent governance: Approve, scope and revoke apps, integrations and AI agents. Keep an inventory with a named human owner for each agent, and control which external AI clients can reach Slack's MCP server.
- Compliance and records: Configure and defend retention, legal hold, eDiscovery and audit evidence, including AI-generated content. Check that the archiving vendor supports each new object type before the feature is turned on.
- Production triage: Lead high-severity messaging incidents to root cause and work Slack vendor cases to closure.
- Automation and services: Script against the Slack Admin, Discovery, Audit Logs and Web APIs. Build and run the surrounding bots, pipelines and connectors as real cloud services, with infrastructure as code, CI/CD and monitoring.
- Technical leadership: Set the multi-year direction and standards for the platform. Make build-versus-buy and vendor calls, mentor engineers, and work with Security, Legal, Compliance, IAM and the AI platform team without direct authority.
- AI context and interoperability: Partner with the AI platform team to feed Slack context to enterprise AI with permissions intact. Own Slack-to-Teams interoperability.
Qualifications- Experience: 10+ years in enterprise messaging and collaboration engineering, including 4+ years on Slack Enterprise Grid at 5,000+ users. You have owned a platform, not just worked tickets against one.
- Slack depth: Strong Slack administration (retention, eDiscovery export, OAuth scope governance, Slack Connect, information barriers). Working command of Slackbot, Slack AI, the MCP server and AI exclusion controls.
- Technical skills: Real scripting in Python or PowerShell against Slack APIs. Production cloud experience with Terraform or equivalent, CI/CD, secrets management and workload identity.
- Identity: Entra ID, SAML/SSO, SCIM, conditional access and OAuth 2.0. Sound judgment on least privilege for bots, agents and service principals, including prompt injection as an access-control problem.
- Operations: Production triage under pressure, with a clear sense of when an issue becomes a vendor case. Experience with formal change control (blast radius, backout plan, approval).
- Regulated environments: Hands-on support for eDiscovery, legal hold, records retention or audit requests in financial services, healthcare, government or similar.
- Communication and additional qualifications: Runbooks and standards another engineer can execute without you. Teams administration, M365/Purview, Salesforce familiarity and archiving tools are nice to have.
