A Brief Overview

The Staff Civil Engineer will support civil design project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of projects, including substation, transmission, and distribution projects. The Staff Civil Engineer will work closely with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting civil plans according to regulatory requirements, budget constraints, design factors, or client needs. The market is continuing to evolve due to technological advancements and policy changes. Projects partner with utilities and clients with power transmission, distribution, storage, and other related needs to design, plan, and improve the modern electric grid.

What you will do
  • Design and develop detailed site plans for electrical substations, including grading, drainage, and stormwater management systems.
  • Perform calculations for cut-and-fill, stormwater runoff, and soil stability to support site preparation.
  • Design and develop detailed gravel access road design for substation access.
  • Prepare erosion control and support the generation of stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPP) in compliance with local and federal regulations.
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation to produce site grading designs and drawings.
  • Coordinate with structural, electrical, and environmental teams to align site designs with project requirements.
  • Support geotechnical investigations and topographic surveys to ensure project design requirements are captured.
  • Prepare technical reports, construction specifications, and material takeoffs.
  • Coordinate with construction and project management to ensure successful project execution, in accordance with project schedules and budgets, while maintaining a focus on timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Support new project proposals including scope definition, project labor estimates, and project pricing.
  • Review civil vendor drawings; data interface with suppliers, client's other engineering disciplines, detailers, and designers.
  • Assist with guidance and instruction to the civil engineering practice by mentoring and guiding less experienced engineers.
  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 3 years of civil engineering experience required.
  • Or Bachelor's Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of civil engineering experience required.
  • Or Master's Degree in Civil Engineering and 2 years of civil engineering experience required.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam (Preferred).
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong CAD skills (e.g., Civil3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation) and strong knowledge of civil engineering analysis programs (e.g., hydraulic modeling, hydrologic modeling, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to travel.
