About the Role
The Senior Specialist, Conservation Bank serves as the primary technical and regulatory authority responsible for the strategic development, long-term stewardship, credit ledger governance, and operational management of AngloGold Ashanti's conservation banks and ecological mitigation properties across Southern Nevada. This role directs habitat enhancement projects, ensures compliance with federal and state conservation agreements (e.g., USFWS, BLM, NDOW), manages third-party ecological monitoring, and aligns conservation credit balances with the regional permitting and operational requirements of AngloGold Ashanti's mining assets.
As a key environmental authority, the Senior Specialist partners closely with Permitting, Operations, Legal, Land, and Site Leadership teams, serving as a critical bridge between regulatory agencies, field contractors, and corporate environmental governance.
Key Responsibilities
Conservation Bank Oversight & Strategy
• Lead the establishment, management, and long-term ecological stewardship of AngloGold Ashanti conservation banks, mitigation properties, and split-estate land assets across Southern Nevada.
Regulatory Compliance & Agreement Governance
• Ensure strict adherence to Conservation Banking Agreements, Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs), Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances (CCAAs), and state/federal regulatory permits (USFWS, BLM, NDOW, NDEP).
Credit Ledger & Mitigation Management
• Maintain, audit, and reconcile the conservation credit ledger.
• Track species and habitat credit transactions against project disturbance footprints and regional regulatory offset requirements.
Habitat Restoration & Land Management
• Direct baseline ecological inventories, invasive species eradication, native vegetation restoration, water rights management, and infrastructure maintenance (fencing, signage, access controls) on conservation properties.
Contractor & Consultant Supervision
• Manage third-party environmental consultants, ecological surveyors, hydrologists, and biological contractors executing field monitoring and restoration programs.
Agency & Stakeholder Engagement
• Serve as the primary technical liaison with regulatory agencies (USFWS, BLM, NDOW), non-governmental conservation organizations, local ranching/agricultural communities, and regional working groups.
Reporting & Endowment Governance
• Oversee annual ecological monitoring reports and biological compliance filings.
• Coordinate with financial trustees regarding long-term endowment fund allocations, stewardship audits, and property maintenance funding.
Requirements
• Bachelor of Science in Ecology, Biology, Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related scientific discipline required.
• Master of Science Degree in a relevant environmental/ecological field, or certified Wildlife Biologist / Professional Wetland Scientist credentials preferred.
• Minimum 7 to 10+ years of progressive experience in conservation biology, mitigation banking, ecological restoration, or environmental permitting within mining, energy, or natural resources.
• Demonstrated track record managing approved conservation banks, species mitigation credits, or habitat offset programs under Endangered Species Act (ESA) frameworks.
• Proven experience interfacing with federal and state regulatory bodies (USFWS, BLM, Nevada Department of Wildlife) and directing field-based biological contractors.
• In-depth expertise in Mojave/Great Basin flora and fauna, sensitive species life histories (e.g., Desert Tortoise, endemic aquatic species, avian species), and desert habitat restoration techniques.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of Section 7 and Section 10 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), NEPA processes, FLPMA, and USFWS Conservation Banking Guidelines.
• Practical understanding of surface/groundwater rights management, rural land stewardship, and split-estate land use considerations in Nevada.
• Proficiency in GIS mapping tools (ArcGIS/QGIS), spatial data analysis, environmental monitoring databases, and biological survey methodologies.
• Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and consensus-building skills to negotiate conservation banking terms, credit release schedules, and mitigation ratios with regulatory agencies.
• Proven project management capability to manage multidisciplinary environmental projects, oversee endowment budgets, and supervise specialized field consultants.
• Exceptional technical writing and communication skills to produce defensible ecological monitoring reports, agency compliance documents, and management briefings.
• Valid driver's license required with the ability to drive company vehicles to and from project sites.
