NextEra Energy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to serve as a Generator Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Electrical Fleet Team (EFT). This individual will apply advanced knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices to fossil and nuclear power generation assets, with primary responsibility for large turbine generator technical stewardship across a diverse multi-OEM fleet.
This role requires independent technical judgment on complex engineering matters, development and execution of fleet-wide generator strategies, and direct communication with executive leadership on root cause analyses, failure investigations, and implementation plans. The position carries responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating assignments with significant impact on fleet reliability and asset performance.
Travel is required on an as-needed basis, primarily in support of planned outages, field investigations, and vendor shop oversight. This role also requires 24/7 phone availability for site technical support.
Key Responsibilities Technical Expertise and Leadership - Acts as technical liaison within and outside the organization on generator and auxiliary system matters, with authority to act independently on technical decisions
- Leads Root Cause Analysis (RCA), failure mode determination, and countermeasure development
- Presents findings, RCAs, and implementation plans to executive leadership
Engineering and Project Execution - Provides budget and technical guidance for capital and outage engineering projects involving unique or controversial complexities with significant impact on fleet reliability and generation capacity
- Develops and maintains technical specifications, procedures, engineering basis documents, and PM program criteria
- Provides project management oversight on R&D and fleet improvement initiatives
- Evaluates site operational problems and performs system component aging analysis
- Prepares technical reports, engineering evaluations, and executive summaries in support of fleet decisions
Vendor and Supplier Management - Leads technical oversight and audits of generator manufacturer and repair facility capabilities, tooling, quality systems, and engineering resources
- Develops and enforces shop witness hold point requirements and rewind/repair acceptance criteria aligned to IEEE and EASA standards
- Evaluates supplier organizational changes, subcontractor models, and their impact on technical accountability and schedule risk
Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics - Interprets and trends online condition monitoring data including partial discharge, flux probe, thermal, hydrogen system, shaft grounding, collector brush condition, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) sensor outputs
- Reviews and evaluates offline diagnostic testing results including El-Cid, High Flux (Loop/Ring), wedge tightness, Tan Delta, Hi-Pot, IR/PI, and partial discharge testing
- Leads hydrogen leak rate trend analysis, purity monitoring, and dew point evaluation
- Reviews and accepts retaining ring NDE requalification scope, narrative reports, and scan-based inspection outputs
Technical Scope The EFT Generator SME will maintain technical ownership across the following systems on three-phase fossil and nuclear turbine generators up to 1,100 MW:
- Stator - Winding insulation systems, coil installation acceptance, slot wedge systems, stator cooling water/oil systems, end-winding support
- Rotor - Field winding, retaining rings including 18Mn-18Cr requalification, balance, collector systems, brush gear, and current density management
- Excitation Systems - Brushless exciters, PMGs, static excitation systems, AVR/PSS coordination
- Generator Protection Interface - 87G differential, loss of field, stator ground, out-of-step protection; coordination with protection engineering
- Auxiliary Systems - Seal oil, hydrogen gas, stator cooling water, isolated phase bus, potential transformer cabinets, and neutral grounding transformers
- Condition Monitoring - Online PD, flux probes, hydrogen monitors, shaft grounding, brush condition monitoring, EMI monitoring, and thermal sensors
Standards & Technical Frameworks Candidates should demonstrate working knowledge of applicable standards including IEEE 43, 56, 95, 115, 522, ANSI/EASA AR100, EPRI Generator Maintenance Guidelines, and NFPA 70.
The Ideal Candidate Would Have the Following:- Minimum four years of experience in operation, diagnostics, design, testing, and repair of large turbine generators across multiple OEM platforms (GE, Siemens, MHI, Toshiba, Alstom, Westinghouse, or equivalent)
- EPRI Generator Program participation or advanced generator testing certifications
- Experience supporting turbine generator and exciter programs at nuclear generating facilities, including outage planning, quality assurance, and familiarity with nuclear regulatory requirements
- Familiarity with robotic and minimally invasive inspection techniques for partial disassembly outage optimization
