Job SummaryThe Sr. Manager Engineering - Inspections for Railroad Bridge Inspection & Maintenance is accountable for the programmatic oversight, prioritization strategy, and standardized execution of the railroad's bridge inspection and asset management programs. This role focuses on building the robust data foundation necessary for capital programming and operational decision-making.
The position serves as the critical technical and administrative hub for the bridge program: managing inspection, detail strategies, personnel and consultants, establishing clear guidelines and instructional training, and interfacing directly with Maximo/EAM systems to translate inspection findings into structured, risk-based maintenance plans. Operating within a maturing program, the Sr. Manager will navigate a matrixed environment to ensure that accurate data drives optimal resource allocation, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance
Essential Functions- Maintain compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and all applicable corporate safety standards.
- Provide high-level technical guidance regarding bridge structural integrity, load rating, capacity evaluations, and rehabilitation strategies.
- Plan, direct, and oversee consultant and contractor, routine, special, underwater, structural, and emergency bridge inspections.
- Review and audit inspection reports and condition assessments to identify structural deficiencies, operational risks, and required corrective actions.
- Modernize the corporate bridge inventory and inspection records into an asset-management system to provide real-time data integrity, auditable history, and multi-departmental visibility.
- Serve as the technical lead for bridge and culvert assets, collaborating with the Asset Strategy group to execute risk-informed prioritization and lifecycle planning.
- Ensure inspections are executed in strict accordance with regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and established asset-management schedules
- Coordinate with Division leadership and Program Managers to foster cross-functional collaboration among engineering, maintenance, operations, and external stakeholders through structured communication channels and proactive updates
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Plus 9 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Master's Degree in Structural Engineering and Professional Engineer's Registration
- Plus 11 years of relevant work experience.
- Certified Bridge Inspector or equivalent railroad bridge inspection qualifications.
- Familiarity with AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering, AASHTO bridge standards, and railroad operational requirements.
- Experience with bridge management software, asset management systems, and GIS platforms.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Experience managing bridge inspection and SOGR programs for railroad or highway infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing consultant and contractor services.
- Experience with bridge rehabilitation, capital projects, and asset management systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam software
- Knowledge of FRA Bridge Safety Standards (49 CFR Part 237) AREMA, OSHA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations and rail industry standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands- Combination of office and field environments.
- Routine travel to bridge sites and railroad properties.
- Ability to work around active rail operations and in varying outdoor conditions.
- May require climbing structures, working at heights, traversing uneven terrain, and participating in emergency response activities.
- Position is responsible for 24/7 operation
- Available to work at various times to support railroad operations as needed including nights and weekends.
- Travel 20%-25%
The salary/hourly range is $149,400.00 - $193,644.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
