This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.
We are seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to develop, test, and maintain software for embedded control platforms used in power conversion and power electronics systems. This role focuses on firmware and low-level software for microcontrollers, DSPs, and FPGAs, with close interaction between software, control algorithms, sensors, ADCs, gate drivers, and power hardware. The ideal candidate is a hands-on embedded software engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware. They can write reliable real-time code for microcontrollers, DSPs, and FPGA-based platforms, understand how software interacts with sensors, ADCs, PWM, gate drivers, and protection circuits, and are comfortable debugging systems in the lab.
Key Responsibilities- Develop embedded software and firmware for microcontrollers, DSPs, and FPGA-based control platforms.
- Implement low-level drivers, control interfaces, communication protocols, and real-time software for power electronics systems.
- Interface with ADCs, voltage sensors, current sensors, temperature sensors, PWM modules, timers, gate drivers, and protection circuits.
- Implement software for sensor acquisition, scaling, filtering, calibration, diagnostics, and fault handling.
- Support real-time control execution for power converters, inverters, motor drives, and related power electronics applications.
- Develop and debug communication interfaces such as CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, and other embedded protocols.
- Work closely with hardware, controls, and power electronics engineers during board bring-up, integration, and validation.
- Debug embedded software issues related to timing, interrupts, ADC readings, PWM synchronization, communications, and fault responses.
- Perform software testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, lab validation, and documentation.
Required Qualifications- Experience developing embedded software or firmware for microcontrollers, DSPs, or FPGA-based systems.
- Strong programming experience in C/C++ for real-time embedded systems.
- Understanding of ADCs, PWM generation, timers, interrupts, communication peripherals, and low-level hardware interfaces.
- Experience working with voltage, current, and temperature sensor data in embedded systems.
- Knowledge of real-time software design, debugging, and hardware/software integration.
- Ability to read schematics and work closely with hardware engineers during board bring-up and troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience using embedded development tools, debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and lab equipment.
- BS Engineering (computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or similar) and 7+ years relevant industry experience
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with power electronics, power converters, inverters, motor drives, battery systems, or renewable energy systems.
- Experience with DSP platforms, FPGA logic integration, VHDL/Verilog, or FPGA-based control systems.
- Familiarity with control algorithms for power electronics or motor control.
- Experience with fault detection, protection logic, diagnostics, and safety-critical embedded systems.
- Knowledge of bootloaders, RTOS, device drivers, memory management, and embedded software architecture.
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, automated testing, or production software validation.
