Full Job Description
The Specification Engineer serves as the engineering owner of product definitions, bills of materials (BOMs), and product performance requirements. This position is responsible for ensuring all products are accurately defined, properly documented, and manufactured in compliance with customer requirements, industry standards, and performance expectations. Working on-site, the Specification Engineer translates approved designs, customer specifications, and regulatory requirements into manufacturable product specifications, controlled BOMs, quality requirements, and testing instructions for wire and cable products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Product Performance and Specification Development
  • Translate approved designs, customer specifications, drawings, application requirements, and industry standards into complete, accurate, and manufacturable product specifications.
  • Apply electrical and mechanical engineering principles, including capacitance, cross-talk, resistance, shielding, dielectric behavior, and mechanical performance requirements, to evaluate cable designs and constructions.
  • Verify that conductor, insulation, shielding, jacket materials, dimensions, tolerances, and testing requirements align with intended product performance and compliance objectives.
  • Independently review new and revised product definitions to identify missing information, conflicting requirements, unsupported assumptions, excessive tolerance risks, and insufficient validation requirements.

Bill of Materials Ownership and Change Control
  • Create, calculate, verify, release, and maintain engineering BOMs, including material specifications, quantities, construction sequences, approved alternatives, and yield/scrap assumptions.
  • Ensure all BOMs align with released designs, manufacturing instructions, purchasing specifications, quality plans, and customer or industry requirements.
  • Review and approve BOM revisions within delegated authority, evaluating material substitutions and construction changes for performance, compliance, quality, manufacturability, cost, and validation requirements.
  • Reject, return, or hold incomplete, unsupported, or technically risky changes and escalate fundamental design concerns to Design Engineering or Engineering Leadership as appropriate.

Manufacturing Instructions and Cross-Functional Support
  • Create and maintain controlled manufacturing instructions, critical dimensions, tolerances, quality checkpoints, testing requirements, and acceptance criteria.
  • Partner with Manufacturing and Process Engineering teams to ensure manufacturability and establish approved production routes, process parameters, and scrap guidelines.
  • Provide product definition support to Quality, Purchasing, Planning, Order Entry, Costing, Design Engineering, Application Engineering, and Product Management teams.
  • Serve as the designated New Product Introduction (NPI) leader for all new products introduced at the Pearl facility.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field; or an equivalent combination of education and directly applicable wire and cable engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience creating, interpreting, and maintaining engineering specifications, drawings, bills of materials, product structures, controlled documentation, and testing requirements.
  • Experience within the wire and cable industry is strongly preferred.
  • Preferred experience with transmission lines, telecommunications cable, engineering change control processes, and applicable standards such as UL, CSA, NFPA, IEC, and IEEE.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong ability to utilize engineering calculations, professional judgment, standards, historical data, and test results to validate technical requirements and decisions.
  • Understanding of how material selection, dimensions, and construction methods impact electrical and mechanical product performance.
  • Ability to identify and communicate technical risks while effectively escalating unresolved concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance performance, compliance, quality, manufacturability, cost, and delivery objectives.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to revision control, documentation accuracy, traceability, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency with laboratory equipment, engineering tools, and design software.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and actively contributing to operational excellence initiatives.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work for extended periods in a seated position while utilizing computers, reviewing technical documentation, and performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a manufacturing environment that may involve elevated noise levels.
