This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we're developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin's mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.
As a Software Development Engineer III on our Enterprise Software team, you'll design and lead the development of the systems and infrastructure that accelerate every phase of vehicle development, test, and operation-up to and including the day of launch. Your work will span aerospace applications across engineering design, manufacturing, supply chain, mission operations, and customer experience.
We're looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Responsibilities- Architect, design, and develop software systems and infrastructure using languages and technologies like Java, Python, Spring, and AWS components (e.g., Lambda, ECS, S3, DynamoDB).
- Build rich web user interfaces using frameworks like Angular and React.
- Integrate and extend commercial products using GraphQL, REST web services, and message queues.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers to understand their needs and design solutions that accelerate all phases of vehicle development, test, and operation.
- Diagnose and resolve software problems across multiple layers, including installation, deployment, configuration, and server-side and client-side issues.
- Lead design and code reviews, set technical direction, and mentor engineers to raise the bar across the team.
Qualifications- Full-stack developer with at least 7 years of relevant experience writing software and deploying it to a production environment.
- Demonstrated skill in both typed (like Java or C) and untyped (like JavaScript) languages.
- Proven experience designing and architecting scalable systems, and driving technical decisions across teams.
- Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals like algorithms and common data structures.
- Ability to solve problems by writing efficient, working code-even when given incomplete or ambiguous requirements.
- Solid communication skills: open to the opinions of others, willing to bring your own creative ideas for solutions, and ready to own and rectify mistakes.
Preferred Qualifications- We deploy infrastructure on-premises and to Amazon Web Services using systems like Git, Docker, and Kubernetes. Let us know if you have too!
- Some of our applications include rich user experiences in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, using frameworks like React. If you've built these, share your experiences with us.
- We learn from and guide each other. Tell us about your experience mentoring software engineers in a team setting, including design and code review.
- We're increasingly using AI-powered tools for design, code generation, and review (like GitHub Copilot and similar assistants) to move faster without compromising quality. If you've integrated these tools into your workflow-and have a point of view on where they help, where they don't, and how to use them responsibly-we'd love to hear about it.
