JOB DUTIES

The Software Engineer helps build the platform capabilities that power a new generation of digital products. This role is ideal for engineers who want to make visible business impact by designing, building, testing, and deploying secure, scalable services on AWS. You will work on meaningful platform and product challenges, contribute to modern engineering practices including responsible AI-assisted development workflows, and grow your technical depth in a collaborative Agile environment focused on quality, ownership, and continuous learning.

  • Design, build, test, and maintain backend RESTful API services using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
  • Contribute to the delivery of secure, scalable platform capabilities hosted in AWS and support the lifecycle from design through deployment and operations.
  • Work directly on complex application and technical problems, analyze root causes, and implement high-quality solutions.
  • Develop business-value features with attention to performance, reliability, maintainability, and observability.
  • Follow established engineering standards for source control, testing, code reviews, documentation, and CI/CD automation.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools and software engineering agents to accelerate implementation, testing, debugging, refactoring, and documentation while validating outputs through code review, automated tests, and established engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional Agile teams to refine requirements, estimate work, and deliver incremental value to customers.
  • Contribute to front-end or Python-related tasks when needed while remaining primarily focused on Java/Spring Boot backend microservice development.
  • Contribute to structured application and interface code, technical documentation, and operational runbooks in a fast-moving environment.

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE

  • Software Development: Knowledge of software development tools and activities; ability to produce software products or systems in line with product requirements.
  • Software Product Design/Architecture: Knowledge of software product design; ability to convert market requirements into software product design and technical approaches.
  • Software Integration Engineering: Knowledge of software integration processes and functions; ability to design, develop, and maintain interfaces and linkage to alternative platforms and software packages.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication behaviors.

TOP CANDIDATES WILL HAVE

  • Strong backend engineering capability with Java 17+ and Spring Boot to design and deliver RESTful APIs using microservices principles.
  • Proven ability to build secure, scalable platform services in a cloud environment such as AWS or Azure.
  • Experience deploying backend services in cloud-native environments.
  • Knowledge of AI-assisted and agentic software development workflows
  • Ability to review, validate, test, and refine AI-generated code and pull requests for correctness, maintainability, performance, security, and alignment with established engineering standards.
  • Knowledge of responsible AI usage and secure coding practices in AI-assisted development
  • Nice to Have:

    ·Experience building production AI agents using Python

    ·Experience with agent orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph

    ·Experience integration LLMs with external tools, APIs, databases, and retrieval systems

    ·Experience designing evals, guardrails, and monitoring for agent reliability

    ·Multi-agent workflow design and memory/context management

    ·Prompt optimization, latency reduction, and cost control

    ·MLOps or model deployment experience

  • This position requires the candidate to be based in Irving, TX (Dallas)

Summary Pay Range:

$97,530.00 - $158,480.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
