Full Job Description
We are looking for a passionate Software Development Manager to lead a team within the S3 Buckets space. As a core component of the broader S3 Index organization, the S3 Buckets team owns two critical areas: S3 Buckets and S3 Access Points. S3 Buckets serve as the foundational logical containers for storing objects, while S3 Access Points streamline and simplify data access for any AWS service or customer application that stores data in Amazon S3
As the leader of this team, you will be tackling complex challenges in data integrity, performance optimization, and system decoupling, ensuring that S3 continues to deliver exceptional reliability and performance at massive scale.
In this role, you will:
* Lead a team of talented software engineers, fostering their growth and development while delivering critical components of S3's architecture
* Own the vision and roadmap for the S3 Buckets Data Plane systems and interfaces.
* Invent new ways to improve the customer experience for S3's diverse customers.
* Collaborate with your partner teams to invent, design, and develop highly available and scalable distributed systems.
* Build and manage partnerships and cross-org commitments with customers and dependency teams.
* Ensure operational excellence through metrics, monitoring, and continuous improvement
You'll work closely with teams across S3 including Frontend, Index, and Storage teams to continuously improve our systems and deliver exceptional customer experiences.
A successful candidate will feel strongly not only about building good software but about building great teams. The ideal candidate will be able to lead in resource-constrained and performance-sensitive areas, with relentlessly high standards. This role is technical: you'll be expected to contribute to architecture discussions while regularly taking part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises or technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues. A strong understanding of distributed systems, data integrity patterns, and experience operating services at scale is a plus.
AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations - from foundational services such as Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS's services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you'll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.
Key job responsibilities
Innovating on lightweight processes to allow for quick iteration in a highly ambiguous space.
Driving the day to day sprint work as well as roadmap for your area
Collaborating with other engineering leaders to find solutions to brain-contorting problems
Developing the careers of your people, actively mentoring them
A day in the life
You will cultivate a culture of fast-paced innovation with lightweight processes. You will collaborate with product and partner with teams within AWS to deliver product features. The services you will own and build are the foundation of S3 and you will tackle some of the most difficult problems in S3 head-on. In AWS, if you build it, you own it. This means we hold a high bar for test automation, verification, design, and code reviews to ensure our systems meet high standards we demand in service of our customers.
Our team puts high value on work/life balance. We recognize that the circumstances of our team members vary, and we balance work across the team so that we're all able to maintain high standards on behalf of our customers, as well as allow for rich and happy personal lives. We maintain a regular on-call rotation across our teams with engineers and managers all taking part to resolve the inevitable issues that arise. We don't like getting paged outside of work hours so we work to ensure our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged we work together to resolve root cause so that we don't get paged for the same issue twice.
