As a Software Development Engineer II on the Lightsail team, you will build features and services that simplify compute, storage, networking, and website hosting for customers who need things to just work. The team is expanding quickly, adding new capabilities like website hosting and agent hosting, and you will help shape what comes next. You will work across the full software development lifecycle, from understanding customer problems through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operations. Key job responsibilities
- Design and build features for Amazon Lightsail's distributed systems, working in Java, Go, JavaScript, and React across both backend services and frontend experiences.
- Collaborate with partner teams across AWS - including Amazon EC2, Amazon Route 53, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS) - to integrate Lightsail capabilities with the broader AWS ecosystem.
- Own the operational health of the services you build by identifying root causes of production issues and driving permanent fixes, ensuring customers experience reliable performance.
- Participate actively in design reviews and code reviews, providing constructive feedback to teammates and mentoring other engineers on writing clean, maintainable code.
- Evaluate new technologies and approaches, including generative artificial intelligence tools, to improve team productivity and the quality of solutions delivered to customers.
A day in the life
You start your morning checking operational dashboards for a Lightsail service you recently launched, then join a design review where you and a teammate work through how to integrate a new hosting capability with an existing AWS service. After lunch, you pick up a feature task, writing backend logic in Java and wiring up the React console so customers can try it out. Later, you review a pull request from a teammate, leave detailed feedback, and update documentation so the next engineer who touches this code can ramp up quickly.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
