Overview
MONO is seeking a Social Director—an entrepreneurial, culturally fluent leader tasked with inventing, growing, and scaling our social media practice. This player-coach role is responsible for defining the agency’s social vision, driving commercial growth, and building a modern, cutting-edge discipline—answering what the social offering of the future truly looks like. You will architect a best-in-class integrated offering that seamlessly connects social, creative, media, communications planning, PR, influencer collaborations, and experiential to keep MONO at the forefront of modern creative culture.
At its core, this role requires a sharp understanding of human behavior, culture, and communities. Being passionate about how people think, behave, engage, and connect across platforms is critical—as is the ability to translate those insights into high-impact, business-driving social expressions of brand strategy that unlock new market opportunities.
As Social Director, you will serve as both a senior client advisor and a growth-minded agency leader. You will drive strategic excellence, capability development, business expansion, and talent leadership—ensuring social is aggressively embedded from the earliest stages of planning to shape communications strategy, creative development, media planning, and modern customer engagement.
Responsibilities
- Define and lead the agency's social vision, philosophy, and best practices, building a best-in-class practice across strategy, content, community management, creator/influencer marketing, social commerce, paid social, and emerging platforms
- Establish standards, processes, and technology that drive innovation and operational efficiency, and identify emerging cultural trends and platform shifts that create new opportunities for clients and the agency
- Ensure social is embedded in strategic and communications planning from the outset, informing audience, messaging, channel, and customer journey decisions
- Lead social strategy and integrated communications planning for key client relationships, serving as a trusted advisor to senior clients on trends, opportunities, and risk
- Partner with brand strategy, creative, media, PR, influencer, and analytics teams to develop integrated marketing solutions, and define the role of social across earned, owned, paid, and shared channels
- Establish frameworks for social listening, measurement, and performance optimization, grounding recommendations in audience intelligence and business outcomes
- Lead social strategy for new business, thought leadership, and agency growth initiatives, and identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and capabilities
- Hire, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing social team, fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, innovation, and accountability
Qualifications
- 10–15+ years of experience in social strategy, digital marketing, communications planning, PR, media, or integrated marketing, including significant agency experience leading social for major brands
- Proven success building, scaling, or leading a social practice, department, or capability within an integrated agency environment
- Experience advising executive-level clients and contributing to new business growth and agency development
- Deep understanding of social platforms, audience behavior, content ecosystems, creator marketing, community management, social commerce, and paid social
- Strong knowledge of communications planning, customer journeys, and channel strategy, with expertise in social listening, cultural intelligence, and performance measurement
- Familiarity with social technologies, publishing and listening platforms, analytics solutions, and emerging AI-enabled marketing capabilities
- Exceptional strategic thinking, storytelling, and communication skills, with a proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams
- Bachelor's degree in advertising, marketing, communications, journalism, PR, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
This is a locally-based role, where relocation will be required for candidates living outside of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. We currently observe a hybrid work model. We work onsite every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for Work From MONO (WFM) days, in addition to moments that matter outside of those designated days, with the purpose of fostering agency connection and aiding collaboration. Some travel may be required.
